View Full Version : Congo Tets
Hey All
I have been going some home work the past few days, and i think i want to get some Congo's?
i will get rid of all the other fish( lemon tets, rummynoses, danios, white clouds) and only keep the Cardinals and black neons.
what i want to know is, any members that have had Congo's b4? are they safe with plants? how many should i get for the tank?
Thanks
Vez
Don't think they will munch plants ... but should be kept in a small shoal. They can not be added with any fin nippers. Also the colours seem to be better in lower light so this might mean that you should go with a low tech / light tank. They like soft water and slightly acidic ph 6 .. so this might also impact plant growth. Temp 23 - 28 ... again something to consider for winter.

thanks ferdie
im looking for a nice shoaling fish, something with a bit of size, as the "main" focus point, and then the Cardinal and Black Neons and the Red Cherry Barbs..
maybe some yellow banded tets?
Try some torpedo barbs, stunning but pricey.
yellow banded that could work - go odd numbers ... with loads of plants. These guys are hardy so you should be able to make them work in your current tank.

I had a group of Congos - 1 male and 4 females. The males are nice, but the females are a bit bland in my opinion.
I have seen something called Yellow Congos which are a bit more colourful.
thanks all!
I want Big fish, that will fill the tank. the Torpedo's are cool, but they chow plants, so thats a no no!
The Bolivian Rams only stay low to the ground, so the mid section is so empty, any other large community fish do you think would work?

One of the larger Gouramis?
Or mid size Cichlid?
Thats teh thing, i want to keep the tank planted, with a nice shoal fish!
Vez, I have a group of 4 Congo's, 2 x Male, 2 x Female. They are really beautiful fish, they sometimes tend to be a little shy, but they only get to a size of 8/10cm depending. I currently have mine in my planted 3ft tank and I never had a problem until my new Apisto's arrived... I'm wanting to get 2 more to put 6 into my 6ft tank so that they and the Kutubu Rainbows can swim around together.
The rainbows are a fish you could consider as "large" shoaling fish... My Kutubu's are supposed to reach about 12cm in length, and thier colours are amazing they can change from a light silvery blue to a very dark blue with an orange flash that runs from the nose to the dorsal fin, that they can lighten or darken at will. I'm not too sure what they are like with plants as I only have them in the 6ft with Anubias...

Thanks Skye!
i have only seen the small ones in our LFS's but this can also work, stunning fish!
the mid section of the tank is to empty, as the cardinals and the cherry barbs love the plants, the endlers and clouds are at the top, and almost nothing in the middle
Vez, I obviously feed my fish way too well because I got my Congos at about 3/4cms and now they are almost at full size and my Kutubu's I got at about 5cm and they are at about 8cms. When I've been back to my lfs I see that he still has a few left of the stock I bought from and they are barely any bigger than when I bought from there originally.
I've seen that there are now quite a variety of the larger rainbows becoming available, just keep an eye out and I'm sure you will pick up some real stunners...:blink1:
