Dechlorinator

Once you have filled up your bucket of water and added the dechlorinator, how long will it take for the dechlorinator to remove the Chlorine and when is it safe to put the water into the tank?

I know of PLENTY of people who actually don't use dechlorinator at all! I use it in the majority of my tanks and add the water immediately after adding the dechlor - never had a problem yet. This also depends on the size of the water change - if it is a large water change I usually add and I add for my sensitive species. Small changes don't always get dechlorinator added. Please just don't assume that not adding dechlorinator will work where you live, first check the amount of chlorine in your water and also whether or not there is chloramine added. Here in the Western Cape I know that there is no chloramine currently added to our water.

I always use dechlor it's just a fail safe for me ever since i was young, If you smell the jhb water the chlorine is high you can even taste it.
So i can put the water in straight after dechlor. Great stuff!

Hi FF -Be careful, I know that Rand Water Board/Jhb Monkeypality use "Chloramines" so in JHB a dechlor is a MUST.
Here in the Cape the water supply is governed by the TASA mambers - so no Chloramines only Chlorine :)

Ya! That's not fair if we had tell them here jhb to not use certain chems they would laugh us right out the door! You guys definatley are lucky over there.
Also don't worry Zaf i always use dechlor. When i die one day they will have to pry the dechlor out of my dead fingers. lol!!!!:)

Zafgak also told me something the other night, can't remember the exact figures but something to the effect of the majority of chlorine buggering off in 2 hours or so.

I know it buggers off over 24 hours, as I've always treated my Bettas with water I left overnight.

Also of the opinion that I do smaller water changes (25%) straight off the tap, but again I've always been in the Western Cape.

Phone the municipality they should be able to tell you if not who to contact.

I was previously told that there is apparently a web-site available where the municipalities post what is in the water as well as the quantities. I've never been able to find the website but if anyone does it would be a great link here :D

Since it is winter I've been keeping water overnight, mostly to warm the water up before chucking it into the tank. So, by then all of the chlorine should have dissipated.

In summer, I just chuck in water straight from the tap.

Having said that, I have recently purchase a dechlorinator, so I'll be using that just in case anyway.
