Sorry guys the heading doesnt really make sense.
Looking for cheap goldfish for a pond.

That does not look like a real big pond mate...get it up,running and cycled... 3-4 Goldfish would be ample...Rather get comets for it - the shallowness and inabillity to hold its temperature will stress out more fancy types...
matteffect
23-09-2011, 18:47
How do you know shallowness? Its a good 1m deep.
matteffect

i will get some comets because i understand your reason

Soz - looked like one of those dinky little 20cm deep "Header" ponds you get from most nurseries...

np. I think its about a 300L, because it is pretty big.
That is going to look awesome ... plant loads of plants around it.
Your comets will eaisly grow to be foot in size so do not add load of fish just because they are small. BTW I took a big storage box - did some 50 mm piping added media (think it was rings, batting, bio balls) and a fountain pump in the pond then pump the water into the box. Filters through the media top to bottom and overflows into the pond. Works like a charm - best thing of all I seldom need to clean the filter - one a year. This has been running for over 3 years 24x7 - I needed to replace the shaft on the pump once.
This was mine back in 2009 - hmm that reminds me - time to clean the filter ..

Where did you get that tub of yours .. that size at 1m deep - nice. I would love to add one for the dogs water bowl in the backyard.
matteffect
23-09-2011, 20:41
Well its not really a tub. I think its a carbon fibre thing made for actual ponds. My friend gave it to me with the filter, so grateful. Mine just pumps the water out the pond into the filter, filters thorugh top to bottom and runs back into the pond. Nice bubble effect. Thanks.
I will upload some more pics tomoz as when i started taking photos it was getting dark.
Yes please post more pics .. oh and if you could ask your friend about the source .. mine is some german import that builders had a few years back, but they seem to have stopped the range since people only bought them when they went on sale.

To be honest, i dont think my friend really cares. He never liked fish so he just gave the pond to me. The pond as already at his house when he moved in, so he wouldn't know. Sorry

Im going to let the pond cycle, for a few weeks. Once thats done i will obtain some comets. Is 4 good or to many?

Been looking at your pics...please post some TRUE length, breadth and depth measurements when you can....looking at your pics, there is no way that sucker is a meter deep... I have built over 400 ponds for poeple in my live,so realy perplexed by you saying its a meter deep... If you estimate its 300 liters and a meter deep - that means your surface area will be something like 20 x 15cm - wich it clearly aint...
Give us the correct measurements tomorrow and we can only then give you proper, acurate advice dude...
matteffect
23-09-2011, 21:41
Will definetly do. I will measure properly tomorrow.
The calculations for 300lt if 100cm deep should be 60cm by 50cm

Soz - thanx Slayer...still - in pics it clearly aint that either...(Dont do math all that well on a Friday night...biochem never fails me though...lol)

24-09-2011, 08:00
Ok guys im really sorry i got the measurements wrong.
Length=1.2m
Width=96cm
depth=40cm
depth=40cm And in this is the problem potentially for the cold. Does the pond get direct sunlight to warm the water during the day?
matteffect
24-09-2011, 08:44
I will check that today. If the clouds go away.
Even if not then you can still keep fish in the pond in the warmer month - and maybe move them indoors if it get to cold.

Just a question, is it possible to keep comets in my pond? because ive seen koi and goldfish being kept in ponds in the winter when its freezing cold and they were fine. The ponds were a little deeper than mine though.

In South Africa you will have no problems keeping red comets, yellow commets,Sarrassa comets and Shubunkins(and give you a nice colour mix) in that pond outside through summer and winter,no problemo.. - 6 to 8(50 - 75l per fish) adult fish will find your pond to be a great home... If you cant find fish on here from members, may I suggest you go buy them from a reputable koi dealership rather than a LFS... Koi dealers have a much better grasp on parasites and how to treat for them han your average LFS... Expect to pay between R10 - R20 a comet/shubunkin...
They will breed after a while, some fry surviving to eventualy overcrowd your small pond...sell them off for a bit of pocketmoney...
As for feeding - once per day in summer and maybe once or twice a week in the depths of winter.. remember you need to Waterchange your pond, just as you do your aquarium.... G'luck with it...

A few more questions:
As for feeding - once per day in summer and maybe once or twice a week in the depths of winter.. remember you need to Waterchange your pond, just as you do your aquarium.... G'luck with it... What should i feed these fish?
Also how many fish can i get (comets).
How must i put in the plants?

Wrote this like an hour ago.....
As for feeding - Tetrafin goldfish flake and pellets are good - even a quality koi food will do - just dont feed them that el-cheapo red and green pond pellets....
How must i put in the plants? ...lol - With your hands?... If ponds to deep to kkep them just above the surface as I expect them to be...raise them with some bricks placed on bottom....

I mean like must i put them in a pot and grow them or what?
Where could i get some plants?

Buy pond plants from koi dealers generally.... comes planted in nursery black bag already - no need to transplant for the 1st 2 years or so...

Will check out the koi dealers, for plants and comets.
Hi again Matt!
Here's wishing you much fun with your goldies! I'm really fond of mine... have raised eggs to hand-sized fish in a year! Pls be sure to feed your crew with a varied diet... mine get two kinds of flakes, 2 x sorts of pellets, and then, other things: they like the odd pea, LOVE no-fat mince, and if I'm eating white fish, they get some too! I got my 1st goldie aged 6 (me) ... and still had her when I sold up @16.
Also, if you feed them in the same place at the same time each day, they get very "Tame"... I've just trained a bunch in a week (pond-sitting) ...obviously, they just learn that a certain voice means food, but it is cute!
Hope you have LOTS of fun!

Thanks so much tracyp. I actually getting comets, but i'm sure they are very alike.
As for feeding i will be going out to look for some food that is good for them one of these days.
Well done on training your fish. I recently trained my discus, so when i knock lightly on the glass they know its food, so when i knock they come up right to the glass.
Thanks
Hi Matt, My Goldfish will be spawning soon so if you need a few hundred fry drop me a pm with your details.
