Noob Q's are why we hang out here! To help if we can!

A true Aquatic plant spends it's life underwater, therefore can live and thrive in an aquarium under the right circumstances.

A non-aquatic is a plant which will survive short periods of time underwater, usually just long enough to get from the wholesaler to the petshop, and then into your tank, where it will expire!

You'll be looking for true aquatics... good starter plants include Vallisneria, Java fern (slow but if you have dodgy lighting, not a bad option), Java Moss...

My pleasure! If you get stuck with finding plants, then ask here on TASA... someone will post you a starterpack!

Looks like the emersed(grown outside of the water in a hydroponic system)leaf form of Alternanthera reineckii lilacina... Actualy(if I'm correct...lol)this IS an aquatic species... relatively easy to grow IF you dose ferts and got good lights... Under strong light it will get a very nice red colouration... Even growing out your tank and flowering if you dont prune it...

The current little roundish leaves will "melt" over time....Snip off the growing points of your plant to encourage it to form sideshoots of the new, longer underwater growth form...

azurekoi and Zoom - perhaps its time to start a sticky with common non-aquatics and photos?

Not a bad Idea Henk Hugo - beginning to feel a bit bad by constantly saying: "Sorry,a non-aquatic species - go plant it in your garden" to fresh faced and keen new "planties" after they post some of their new purchases on here for I.D'ing...lol!!

so back on topic - Arnold789 - di you buy it or just take a photo in the LFS tank?

Be my guest. Make it and I'll sticky it for you.

Alternately... if the plant you are wanting are NOT on our current lists... then assume it to be non-aquatic. Where do you draw the line...? So many terrestrial plants are sold as aquatic.

Maybe what we should have is a set of pics of commonly sold bog plants that catch us out?
