Plant trimming/pruning help needed

Hi there.


I started my first planted tank a few weeks ago and already it has grown on me. :)


I noticed that my plants are growing quite well and noticed some new "roots"/"stems" shooting out over my gravel.


My question is, where do I cut the piece off and what part should be planted again.


I am a noob, so any advice will be appreciated.

You can "Train" Vallis runners to go where you want them to anchor by shifting them with small rocks,but easier to let them go where they want,wait till the new plantlet is like 5 - 7cm long...Cut it from the mother plant then and replant where you want it....

GO DUDE! those are very happy vallis! You can leave them to spread if you like ( Vallis jungles are simple & grand!) or just cut the runners midway between plantlets & replant where you like.

You'll have to wait for the new plants to grow a bit more before you can cut the runners and transplant them.
Cut the runner where it emerges from the mother plant and then again 5 mm before and after the daughter plant,you can then uproot it and replant or leave it where it is,or throw it out.
If you decide to replant the daughter plant,trim the roots to about 2 cm,this will make planting easier and encourage new root growth.

very timely thread! My vallis is also running nicely and I was also wondering how to manage them :)

azurekoi, for interest sake. the vallis in my main tank is doing very well. the ones I planted in my nano melted completely. Vallis must like flourite!

LoL- the Flouride helps but yes Excel does melt down Vallis and a few other plants. I made this mistake as well when I first got my hands on some Vallis. I suppose thats how we all learn.

Strange... I use Excel and my Vallis is doing fine...

In some cases you do get Vallis that is immune to Excel Apoc had Vallis as well that didn't melt whilst dosing Excel. Question is ernstb are you dosing the water column or any other CO2??

My apologies.. noob here... what is the water column?

All I use is root fert tabs, flourish and flourish excel.

No need to apologize, are you dosing EI (Estimated Index), guess is no hehe?? Or perhaps some DIY Co2??? But as I said earlier some Vallis is immune to it.

I use about a one quarter of the recommended dosage once a week. Or mine could be immune like you mentioned. :bigsmile:

I dose Excel at recomemded dose every day and my Vallis goes BOS...leaves like over 50cm long.... Inert substrate,twice weekly ferts...

Yip there's nothing wrong with dosing excel.... if the val dies off intially it will grow back excel resistant leaves.... then from there ot even benefits with some excel
