is it hard?

Its not to hard.
Some times they struggle to breed other times they don`t.

I have bred with this male before.
I think he is a good dad. He did not eat any eggs or fry.

This is the first time I breed the female.

Hi Rooivlerkie
Sorry to hear about your bettas that died of Dropsy, nasy thing this Dropsy. I also recently lost a RED Butterfly HM Male to Dropsy, only had him for about a week..RIP. I have a female with Dropsy aswell. Bought some Bactopur and it seems to help. She is in isolation for 2 weeks now, she only started eating yesterday to my surprise, thought she is a gonner for sure... feeding her live adult brine shrimp and frozen blood worms, have to put it in front of her mouth with feeding prongs though, but hey, she eating. She is a real fighter... realy hope she recovers fully, she still has raised scales and is still swollen but she looks a damm site better. Congrats on the fry. Charles.

Thanks everone.
@Chalres sorry to hear about your halfmoon.

My fry are going on great about a cm long. They had spawn the 15 Desember last year.
And they are very cute. One is a big fish. I think he/she will be the bully.

Thanks
Rooivlerkie congrats on the fry. My Black Copper HM male with a Turquoise/Blue D female spawned on 01/01/2012. ETA is tomorrow 03/01/2012. He built a huge nest, biggest of all my other 14 males, half the width of a 1ft tank. Very excited about this since my 1st Black Orchid HM male died while tending to his fry. They are absolutly beuatiful. Will post some pics soon.

Congrats on all of the litle ones reading about, hope all of them reach adulthood. Seems very interesting breeding these oke's. Maybe should give it a try some or other time. Would love to see the fry of the Black copper male, Charles, please be quick with your pics!!!!

Thanks wsteene. Will do as soon as they are a little bigger. Will take some pics of my Black Blue lace HM fry soon. They are very beautiful. No Blacks though (Apartheid...lol), seems like Rainbow Nation. Got about every colour except Black. They say if you cross a Black HM male with a Steel Blue female that carries the Melano gene you should get black. But anyways, will post some pics on my profile albums soon.

I have a black and blue half moon whitch I WANT TO BREED. I will post a pic if he build a nice big nest.
I recall seeing on another thread that one must give them a cup or something the build the nest under. Is that not required?

Charles
07-01-2012, 21:29
Hi Rooivlerkie. Yes she did!!! She is back with the other ladies in the 3ft tank and doing well. Thanks. I posted pics of my Black Bluelace HM male X Turquoise ST(D) female fry on my profile albums, check it out! I've also moved those fry to a 2ft tank today as the 1.5ft is getting to small for them. There 350 fry in total!!! One was unfortuanately killed, the others ate him so I'm left with 349 fry toningt of which the majority seems to be males...eish!(lol).

Charles
07-01-2012, 21:38
Hi TomK. The polystyrene cup is only to manipulate the male to build his nest where you want him to build it... my Black Copper HM male build a huge nest all around the cup... all the others used the cup method. The good thing about the cup method is that it prevents, to a certain extent, a cold draft entering suddenly into your tank when you have to lift the lid to feed or clean ect. thus protecting the fry this way. The cup method works like a charm, well most of the time. Use some sello-tape to stick it to the glass because it does get knocked around in the courting stage! Good luck and I hope this helps. Charles

Charles I am glad that your female healed. I hate it to lose bettas.

TomK I gave all my males a cup. Sometimes they start a nest without the cup.

My fry are going great. Yhe began to get blue patches. Small patches. Some are over a cm long. And this time there are many.

Hi Rooivlerkie. Thanks for the nice comments. Yes they are beautiful fry, the pics don't do them justice though. But anyhow.. You must also post some pics of your fry as they age. I see that out of my six spawns, the majority of them are males, do you experience this as well? Regards. Charles

Hi Everyone, out of my batches I have bred last year, it was all different when it came to gender, but my larger batches is normaly mostly either 65% males or 65% females (+-). I dont think that there is any particular reason that this happens, like Kribs where the PH plays a part of the gender.

Charles I will post pics of them when they are 5+ weeks old. The largest one I spot is around 1.3 cm long. They began to get a little blue on them.

Thanks Charles.
I will try to post pics tommorow.

I am thinking of breeding again. But my black half moon male does not want to breed. So I am going to look for a nice crowntail male today. If I can`t find one I`ll breed with the fed halfmoon again

Rooivlerkie. Isolate your black male for at least 2 weeks in his own and in his own tank away from all other fish. In the third week, place the female that you want him to breed with next to him, outside his tank, for 10 - 15 min in the morning. Put a card in betwen them again and feed him only live food twice a day after he has seen the female and do the same for the female. Tonight do the same. Do this for a week and try to breed him again with that female. Feed them 2-3 hours prior to breeding them and add Black Water Extract to the spawning tank. See if that works for you because it did for me. Worth giving it a try. I have a stubborn Crowntail male that does the same thing, going on the fourth try within the next month or so. He builds the nest and all, the female comes submissive to the nest... then all hell brakes lose. I don't with this male, maybe he is to aggressive? Well time will tell.

I've also stoppped breeding for now. Raising previous spawns now and awaits my new breeding stock of HM males and females. So i should be starting with them in mid Feb 2012 if all goes well.

Thanks Charles will do
The problem is the male build a nest and then when I put the female in he flares at her and chases her.
I hope he will breed..............

The fry are growing well. And they are red and blue.

Hi Rooivlerkie here are some pics I took today of my Black Blue Lace HM male X Turquoise STD female. They are 8 weeks and 2 days old today.

13108131091311013111

Either the male or female carried the Marble gene but sice the male died... I'm at a loss. I'm not breeding with this female again, only full on HM females only. But still, they are very nice and I have some that I will reserve for future breeding programs.
