If they weren't plant chompers, I would've had a tank with them setup already.
Rowland - I've read somewhere on the net some time ago that not all Malawis eat plants, there are some that are plant friendly. Is this true? If so, which types? Help asb....ek is maar vrek dom as dit kom by Malawis. Thanks mate
Thanks for the comments guys.
Solex, yes, you are right. In the lake, basically two distinctly different biotopes exist. One for the rock dwellers (mbuna) who feed off the algae covering and would also take to the odd plant or two. Then you get your open water swimmers (Haps) which feed on zooplankton, shrimp, other fish etc. They are larger more predatory fish with a more peaceful way about them. Ambiguous, I know, but they tend not to squabble as much among themselves as what the mbuna do.
They also often occur within beds of Vallis in the Lake. Keeping them in a planted thank, I don't think so. They still tend to upset the substrate when creating breeding bowers and this could have plants strewn all over.
