View Full Version : LFS near braamfontein?
Does anyone know where I can get fish around Braamfontein/JHB central? We've started a small community tank at the office... :D

there are a 2 LFS in the south about 7kms from braamfontein. one is called kennilworth and the other, which is (at the most) 1km down the road called leeways gills and fins in the leeways nursery.
Small_fry, what do you think of Kennilworth? I live not far from there but have never been in. Is it worth it?

Hey Angelk,
It is definitely worth going to see...They have a huge stock of fish all different kinds and in good condition.
The only issue I have with them was that 2 weeks ago I told them that they were grossly overpricing their Kent ammonia detox at R215 per bottle. I told them I could get it near where I work for around R90 a bottle. Last weekend (not this one that has just passed) went there again to look for a lemon oscar and saw they had dropped their price to around R115...
but go have a look. They have gold nuggets plecos there for R185 or so (could be wrong) but definitely in around that range.
If you thinking of going there Leeways is an awesome fish shop except pricing for certain species of fish are grossly overpriced but exceptional quality. Plus their display tanks are awesome...clown loaches that top out at 10 - 12 inches easy...
I'll spend the $$$ on decent quality fish anyday. But beware of some LFS, you buy crap quality fish and still pay higher fees.
@ rory - Good one for invading the office space now mate :)
Thanks for that Small_Fry! Will check it out before I move to the North. I always thought it was just a nursary trying it's hand at fish! I have been to Leeways but i'm not a fan.

No the LFS is completely separate to the nursery. I am a big fan of them as they are always willing to help and give decent advice...When I bought my oscar from them they actually enquired what size tank he was going into. First time any LFS has asked me that! But I highly recommend them.
Went to both Leeways and Kennilworth. Leeways had some very nice display tanks but not too much variety in their stock. They didn't have any plants. They were ok for a fairly small nursery LFS.
Kennilworth was a lot better. They were much bigger for starters so had quite a bit more variety although still not *that* much stock. They at least had 1 tank full of plants and quite a few nice display tanks. They also seem to have quite a big area for building tanks. They had a pretty good selection of equipment and offered good advice (from all their staff, not just 1 or 2).
Fish at both places seemed pretty healthy. Never saw any dead fish or any whitespot etc.

hi rory,
checked out kennilworth today and seems like they have got more stock in. guess you went when the stock was low. thats the problem with going during the week, all the decent stock runs out over the weekend.
i found some Uaru cichlids there today...very cool.
