Howsit guys
I don’t know if you guys already do this but I have found a cheaper alternative to filter floss for us guys who go through a whole lot.

My mother makes teddy bears and she has bags and bags of the stuff they stuff the teadys with and i took a sample and put it next to the filter floss, to me it looks the same. so i bought a huge bag of the stuff for R20 at the local material shop. I rinse the floss first then i put it back with a little bit of the old floss to keep the bacteria count up.

just a thought:bigsmile:

The real thing isn't all that expensive, at least not the big AKWA bags of the stuff.

Nice find... just remember that filter floss is not the place you want to grow bacteria and you must have some good type of filter media specifically for biological filtration in your filter.

best filter media on the market, IMO, is Eheim Efisubstrat and Substrat Pro. A small quantity of 1Litre has a massive surface area.

DIY options, which I've not tried and therefore cannot recommend, include kitchen dish scrubbers which apparently have a substantial filter area.

bioballs in a trickle tower are also great for freshwater...

I use bio balls for the bacteria. i just use filter floss to help clean the water and a sponge to catch the big stuff.

I was in a wholesaler a few months back, and saw his ladies bagging the stuff. They took the batting, ripped it up and bagged it

in my internal box filter, I have from the bottom up, Bio Balls, then ceramic rings, then batting folded vertically over itself, then AC, then a big wad of Filter Floss.

AC= Activated carbon?

That is correct!
