Hey guys,

Seeing as my new place can't accommodate my 4ft, I had to scale down a bit, but only in size!

This new tank may be smaller, but it will be equally packed! I'm thinking DIY mini canister/sump with either siporax balls or purigen, and LED strip lighting that will be hardly visible but packing a potent white light!

The inhabitants will for now remain a mystery though...

Watch this space!

Martin.

Glad to see you only gave up on the 4ft and not the Hobby!

either siporax balls or purigen

Hi Shibby.
Sorry for your loss but i believe you would setup again soon.
Why the Purigen?, Siporax with a bit of mechanical media would be perfect.

Haha, naah never! It's the only gap I have to stimulate my mechanical problem solving nature!

Well, if I can get the small spherical siporax, that'll be fine, but if I can only get hold of the bigger rings the filtration might be inadequate taking into account that I would like maximum filtration per minimum cubic area. For that reason, the purigen would occupy 99% of the available space and thus probably provide maximum filtration... But that remains to be proven!

Such a pity I'm letting my current sump go... It's perfect in every way. Together with my UV filter, it has done 3 weeks without a water change with parameters remaining stable. Thanks to Gary the algae-eating-shell-occupying-finless-boneless-rounded-fruit-resembling um... fish... and my ancistrus, algae has also been under control!

Um... Siporax balls is biological filtration, Purigen is chemical. You cannot have a filter without biological... so Siporax is a given! If there's space, go with purigen... but all purigen does is make the water clearer.... not really a filter for getting rid of nitrites etc...

Purigen is chemical filtration until it becomes exhausted. After that, it "may" provide some biological filtration, as bacteria may colonise it. But the difference in surface area of a bag of purigen and the same size bag of siporax is light and day, with siporax the clear winner.

Thank you kindly! I will then rather opt for the siporax!
