My wife and I have discovered our angels and Swordtails doing very funny things in our tank.

I was sitting in front of the tank earlier with a test tube filled with tank water and doing my weekly nitrate testing. I have to shake the tube for a minute for the chemicals to mix properly, and because the tube leaks when I shake it, I wrap it in an old tea towel. As I was shaking the towel, the swordtails were at the bottom of the tank staring at me bobbing up and down very irratically. When I stopped, they stopped. When I shook, they shook.

The angels also started going wild and swimming very drastically towards me. My wife tried the same now with her cell phone, with the light facing the tank, and they did exactly the same thing. It was so funny.

Is this normal? Or just my funny fish?

lol - sounds really strange. It could be them begging for food though....all my fish tend to get excited when we are near the tank, more so with familiar faces :)

Heehee.... yes, they did get even more excited when my wife opened the cupboard beneath the tank. They seem to know that when she opens the cupboard, it's food time. When I open, it's testing time, or changing time, or maybe, just maybe food. So they get more excited with her.

And they say fish have a 20second memory!

Many fish grow to recognise their owners -Oscars are well known for this, and will even take food from the owners hand. Betta's too.
