View Full Version : How do I do a Dry Start in my tank?

Hi TASA

I have recently acquired a 60l tank plus a 5kg bag of white fine gravel mixed with Sera Floredepot.

How do I do a Dry Start and what plants should I consider trying?

The 60l tank is a bow front tank that has the following dimensions: 48cm x 25cm x 34cm.

its pretty basic.. from what i read,

keep the substrate moist (not flooded), plant the plants, cover top with cling wrap, shine light over the setup and watch plants grow.

supposedly plants grow much faster and stronger this way.. this method is usually used for hard to grow plants such as HC..

oh and also open cling wrap to let new air (laced with co2) into the tank daily..

with regards to dosing etc, i think maybe Rudi can elaborate on this? i would dose a general fert.. but u already have sera depot so i wouldnt worry abt that...

what u planning to dry start?

I'm not sure on what plants I want but I guess the forum could help me decide.

Hi yes I might be able to help, just give me a few more weeks. By the time you
fill your dry start I should have enough to spare.

Haha lol shihr, I don't want to dry start flame moss, I just want some after when I fix the filtration system(or rather build from scratch a filtration system) and get the dry start started.

Which is going to take quite a while, so no rush there, Vis.

You can do a dry start for your carpet plants,glosso,H.C.,hair grass,etc.Crypts will respond well to a dry start as well.
Avoid to much water in your substrate,rather keep it a bit dryer and mist the plants every day with a spray bottle.Have your lights on a timer and keep the tank sealed with some cling wrap.Humidity is the key here.
Dry starts can take some time to grow in,depending a great deal on the substrate.
Good luck and post some photos of the set up as it grows in.

Thanks Rudi. :) As soon as I make a filtration system i will attempt a dry start. Where can I get hair grass or glosso?

hair grass u can get from most LFS..
