View Full Version : Salt in aquariums
Hi
Just want to make sure on how much salt you need to ad to your aquarium when starting.
Say for a 50 Liter tank = 1 cup
150 Liter tank = 4 cups
270 Liter tank = about 1 kg or is this too much?
Ok, now I am confused!
I have read one of the other posts on salt. At the LPS when I asked about the salt they told me that I have to put in a cup salt for every 50 Liters water. But the other post said a teaspoon per 50 Liters.
Like my LFS guy told me I have to put about 1kg salt into my 270 liter tank. This morning I accidently got some of the water onto my lips and it tasted very salty. I wondered if this was correct.
the LFS is PE told me 1kg to 1000l , i would trust the guys here not the the fail LFS :p 1 kg per 270L sounds HECTIC to me
Should I be putting salt in my tropical tank? Or is that for marine only?
stripes i presume u are talking about a tropical tank?:p
Hi Reafer
Yes a freshwater tank.
Stripes some people put a little salt in their freshwater tanks as it is apparently supposed to help the fish to fight off infections and keep them healthier etc. Personally, I don't add any salt to my freshwater tanks unless for medication reasons. But 1kg for 270 liters sounds a little excessive to me - especially for a freshwater system.

I add salt to my setups, and i use roughly a handfull, not a cupfull!!
Stripes, in my humble opinion, I think you can put Nemo in that water if you use 1kg salt per 270lt of water
Yeah I mean 1 tablespoon per 50l MAX, and I'm still cautious and rather use 1 teaspoon instead.
But a CUP per 50l = Dead Fish.
Thanks all,
1kg did sound a lot hectic. Luckely no fish was yet into my tank. I did a 50 % water change this morning, and this morning I did taste the water. it tasted allot better.

1 treaspoon per 5 Gallons
1 teaspoon per 5L is alot of salt for freshwater fish . 1 teaspoon is roughlt 5g of salt so for a 270L tank u will put in 54 teaspoons of salt which is 270g of salt which will might kill a fish if it is use to any salt in the tank previosly. start of with alot less and then maybe increase it to that dosage. i only add salt when medicating , the plants dont like it much
