I'm from Edenvale &I have quite a few fish, like Angels, guppies, loaches, suckermouth catfish, gouramis, white widows, neon tetras, glow light tetras, silver tip tetra, bala sharks, mollies, and platy's. Oh don't forget a siamese fighter. I also keep fancy gold fish in a separate tank.

Sounds like a nice selection there, should you happen to have some photos I'm sure everyone would love to see them.
I currently keep Angels, Discus, Kribs, Gouramis, Apistogrammas, Rams, Loaches, Corys (naturally), some assorted tetras, red tailed black shark....umm....there may be others, but I can't think of them off-hand :) LOADS of Angelfish babies at the moment, some Krib babies, some Ram babies (hopefully when I get home IF the parents haven't eaten their eggs again)....

You also sound like you have a fab collection , I'll try and orginise some photos for you guys if you can organise some for me, i'd also love to see your tank as well.
At the moment i've got some of my babies in a quarantine tank so they are not all there. The fish in quarantine are new, so they're being treated before they go into the main tank. Definately don't need any headaches!!:banghead:

Some people SWEAR by them... some people say they a waste of time.

I haven't tried one yet... but could someone explain how they work and what do they get attached to? When I looked at one in an LPS I was highly confused at how it would work. And when I asked them how it works... they just said "it doesn't, it's a waste of money... but we'll sell you one if you want."

All a quaranteen tank consists of is a small glass tank (if space restricted like us) big enough to fit the smallest heater in even if the heater sticks out abit no problem, a small sponge filter and a small pump. That's it i put my tiny tank in the corner of my tiny kitchen and PRESTO!!! :top:instant mini quaranteen tank. I got all my goods from Pet Masters in Boksburg.

 oops!!! still getting use to this site:rolleyes: Sorry!!

Well!! The undergravel filter is a flat plastic mesh case that sits under the gravel, your air tubing is attached to the onboard hard plastic tubing attached to the case, the air is then pumped into the filter & under the case and out another hard plastic tube, this causes a light vaccum/suction under the gravel pulling down any excess food, faeces etc. The bacterial colonie that has built up underneath will effectively breakdown the matter for energy. Therefore keeping the tank in good condition.:smile1:

Zoom - the undergravel filter was the mainstay of tank filtration during the 70's 80's and early to mid 90's. They have lost some appeal in the last decade due to the fact that they are next to impossible to clean. About the only way to clean them is to drain all the water and take them out.. Personally I like them but have stopped using them due to the cleaning issues. As a biological filter they work very well if your setup is correct.

Many times tanks are emptied and the filter taken out - and there in the filter are lots of fish you thought had dissapeared or babies that got into the filter and grew up and could never get out. _ coolie loach breeding traps comes to mind....

Hi Fish Fantasy, welcome to the forum. Don't mean to be nasty, but if you buy livestock from Pet Masters(Le Grange) it is an excellent idea to have your own quarantine tank. They good for variety but personally I would not buy there if I can help it.

Hi Thanks for the advice but i learn't my lesson when buying from them, they all got sick  and died now i only buy a few pieces of equipment from them, my fish i buy from Fish Fantasy World in Muldersdrift. Good quality fish! Where do you buy your fish from?

I stay in Oudtshoorn now, but when I lived there I supported Karen at Primrose Aquarium in Primrose, small shop but she lived for her shop, unfortunately she passed away end of last year and her second husband has the hart, but not yet the experience. Raymond at Amazon Pets in Primrose Hill is quite good with fish, his father and him bred quite intensively at a time, I think he is more into reptiles now, but still good for malawis and info.

Not sure about other places around, been living in PTA for 6 years and now in Oudtshoorn for 3.

Best rule of thumb, if you walk in a shop and there is any dead fish in any tanks- don't buy. Test the assistant on one or two things you know for sure, if they BS you, don't believe anything else.

Might be a bit far to drive, but there is a very active aquarium club in Pretoria.

I don't even ask them any questions anymore cos they all speak the same BS trying to make a sale....sometimes, even the rare knowledgeable ones too. I just ask what I want and get out of there...avoids frustrations
