Hi all,

As most of you know I keep Malawi cichlids, and don't have any plants in my tank, but I'd like to add a little green to my tank, some people said that Vaillisneria is a good idea as they're quite hardy and low light plants.

Will they work in a harder Malawi setup and where can I get some in Cape Town??

Thanks.

Dont think it will work, alot of ppl recommend Java Fern.

Java and anubia arent working aswell - i've tried it and they buggered it up - if its green its gone boet - go for fake plants or a rocky setup. My deacons ate anubias like sweet cake and my vallis like spaghetti.

Hey Warnoob - Vallis is found naturally found in the lake... the trick with it in Malawi tanks is to first get it to propogate in a tub/tanlk outside and MASS plant it in your tank...

Take a 80liter Molly tub(the big round one with rope handles...Inch layer potting soil in the bottom - capped with inch and half normal aquarium gravel....place in good sunny position.... go buy some vallis and plant....Sooon you will have a LOT of Vallis and can mass plant in your tank - yeah, some will get chowwed, but hopefully not destroyed all in one go - giving it time to get established in the tank
Had a 5 foot malawi tank a good couple of years back that had a wall of vallis behind the rock hardscape - must have planted about 600 seperate plants....Worked for a good long while, but eventualy took it out as the runnerers just spread EVERYWHERE...lol

PS: No ferts - just a coupla rusty panel pins every 5cm or so pushed into gravel....
