piranahas ?

hey guys been checking out site for a while ,just to dam lazy to post in generall,
question is has any one had piranahs before , can you get them here, recomendations ?
currently run 1.8 m for 60cm pangasius saitiwosi and a few other cats
and a 1.2m 2 with oscars,believe from what ive read the oscars will be ok with 1 or 2 piranahas..

Firstly welcome to TASA :)

The Pygocentrus Spp Piranha as well as the
Rooseveltia Nattereri Serrasalmus Nattereri Red-Breasted Piranha, are both on the blacklist and we can therefore, according to TASA rules, not discuss them here.

Sorry, may I just ask why we can't discuss them? I understand that we cannot support the trading, or keeping of these and other black listed fishees, but surely some benefit can be gained in educating people as to why any fish are blacklisted, and any other info that is relevant?

Just a thought, not intended to open a can of worms or anything??

To be honest,i dont think you should even be considering keeping them..they WONT be able to go wit oscars anyway due to their regular fin and scale eatin habits(besides the habit of ripping your fish apart in sudden feeding frenzies).also,i have seen them in tanks..very boring fish to be honest..would rather recommend you go for other fish and get more enjoyment out of the hobby

Try a group of Silver Dollars! They are virtually Piranha's with out the cannibalistic tendencys anyhow! Much more intersesting and cool as a shoal!

thanks but nah its the cannibalistic tenDencys that are the attraction,that and doing weekly water changes with the risk of loosing a finger,scary.

If its fish that is being discussed then there shouldn't be a problem. People should be educated. We all learn something new. If a fish is blacklisted, so what?! It doesn't mean it can't be discussed. 'Blacklisted' fish refer to fish that cannot be brought and housed in South Africa; and in no way does it mean that these fish can not be discussed. Whether it leads to someone asking where they can find a 'piranha' for example, then whats the problem with that? Just tell 'em that they're available only in South America, some parts of America and some other parts of the world and not in South Africa. We need to encourage discussion for the purpose of building up on general knowledge. This site is dedicated to tropical fish afterall.

Agree with Asgar. The only thing is that the Greenies/bunnyhuggers are watching these sites, you dont want to say anyting on public internet that will give them amunition against the tropical aquarium trade, for example lead to the complete abolition of the importation of fish etc....

1.2m is barely enough water for just two Oscars, never mind with other Tank mates.
