View Full Version : Freshwater Aquarium Snails
Which freshwater snails are the most useful and helpful in any freshwater setup. This means that they don't harm other tank mates, and at the same time control algae.I was told that Malaysian Trumpet snails are the best in this regard. What do you guys reckon?

Malaysian trumpets keep your substrate alive and well. they stir it up and make sure theres no dead patches. For algea control Niriti snails are the best but they do not bread easily and all snails are blacklisted so you cant legally import them
Hi guys. where can one get these Malaysian Trumpets? Dont they clog up ones filters. I have some small brown roundish.I thought they were Rams horns, but have since found out they are not.

The correct spelling is Nerite snails. If I am not mistaken, these inverts are suitable for marine and brackish setups. However they will survive in freshwater as well. I guess they wouldnt thrive as much as in a marine setup.

you get a freshwater version as well... they can not be imported as all invert are black listed. snails, shrimps, crabs, crawfish etc etc etc
Ok, answer my question dude :) Do you have any? I like new things

they are banned from import and do not breed all that easily due to a complicated life cycle that needs brackish water for the eggs to hatch bla bla bla bla
Ag nee, well I still think I need to come and check your setup out sometime. How about Sunday afternoonish? Let's take offline to discuss further

The FW zebra nerites are indigenous, so no need to import them illegally... ;) (Although they will still be illegal to keep):

removed - trade in illegals
Are there any snails which are legal in SA to keep in an aquarium? I'm wanting some snails which can help move my sand subtrate about, at the same time not being a nuisance to my tank population.

No snails are legal to keep. DEA isnt goingto worry about snails thats already here like apples and the malasian trumpets.... you are looking for the malasian trumpets to stir things up
