Hi guys, before I ask the question let me fill you in a little on my current setup.
I have a 160lt community tank, a 60lt breeding tank and an empty 3 foot tank.

My question is this:
Instead of getting rid of the 3 foot which shares a cabinet top with the 50cm breeding tank and replacing it with 2 1.5 foot tanks, can I not divide the 3 foot into a 2 foot and a 1 foot for grow out and quarantine/hospital/any other needs? It would obviously remain 1 outside tank, but the inside just be compartmentalised, possibly into even 3x 1 foot sections.

What are your thoughts on such an idea, or am I just being stupid? You see, the idea behind this is that my brain still tells me I have one tank and that I'm not suffering MTS, but in reality I actually have more tanks :)

Sound like MTS anyway, lol. Dividing tanks is as common as Guppies. Obviously each tank must have own heating, filtering ect. You would save lots of time and money by just dividing. get a glass cut to size and silicon in place.

My 3 foot is now officially a 1.5'x2 in 1 :)

Hehe,You divided a tank.:p
There is NO cure for MTS and no Quitting.
The anti-mts group that i joined was a bust,as we all got new tanks after the course to thank us for participating.

Now that you know anything is possible even seeing double when looking at your old 3ft ahh 3/2foot ahh 2 tanks, a cool way to do a temporary or permanent breeding tanks division is to use a 5 cm open cell sponge - yes this is not two separate tanks or even water columns but they are divided. The nice thing about this is that the sponge actually can become a filter if you have a power head on the one side and the output on the other. Thinks of it as a central hamburger filter.

Here is the result,

I was going to paint the dividing glass, but I was really worried about toxins leaching into the water. So what I decided to do was to place another pane 8mm apart from the first and fill the gap with river sand for a more natural look and a temperature buffer if I'm running both tanks at different temps ;) I did of course top this off with a nice silicone cap.

Now thats thinking out of the bow... Clever!!

As for worrying about paint - my little paludarium has the water in direct contact with both spraypaint and craftpaint - no adverse effect to my gobies and White clouds... Left to dry for a coupla days - rinsed in the shower and plonked in tank...Works for me...

So I was bored last night and decided to design a breeding setup that will be placed onto my existing cabinet.

The cabinet was custom made to house fish tanks, so has the necessary supports etc.

Counter top dimensions are 1530mm x 430mm.
Currently I have an Aqua H20 50cm tank and the divided 3 foot on it, this is not up to my standards, as its a mixed bag. I like things to look OEM :)

Also, my design allows for 80lt of water in each tank, where I can only have 50lt in each at the moment.

This is what I put together and I have one question; the tank building guides recommend using 6mm glass for the 450mm height. I however will only be topping off to 400mm with water and although in its own right it will be a 1500mm frontage, there will be full height bracing in the form of the 4 pieces of glass used to divide the tank into 3. So the question is, can I use 4mm glass instead?

haha, quickest and easiest way to get all the measurements correct :)

Now I still need help with the glass thickness question please ;)

i would go 8mm and the dividers can be 4 mm. But make the 8 mm aswell, this would work like brasses then. The brasses would allow for 6mm for all glass, DONT go 4mm.

6076

Looking at this logically this is now 3 tanks of the above +- dimension - but in reality this is not true for the base glass - so if you want to be cheap then do the whole thing in 6 mm and hope you never drop anything on the base that might cause some issue.

I have to agree with Go-Big - 8mm for the tank - dividers 6 or 8 mm unless you do the sand sandwich thing again.
