I'm thinking of importing a pair of bettas in maybe a year or so. What do I need to start off?

I'm thinking of a few types but these ones stood out to me:

Male:
Golden Red Dragon

or

Blue Red Dragon

Female:

Platinum White

I'd like your input on whether or not I should do this.

Thanks,
SAMB

Here we go again...
The above photos are of very nice (award winning) fish.
Are the photos yours? If not, please make sure you can use them (get permission)
There could be copyright issues...
Hope you and everyone else understand, that we need to protect the forum.

On the other hand, the idea of importing them, sounds great, but why don't you try and get them through some of our forum-sponsors? I'm sure that they will be able to get similar looking specimen for you.

Sometimes the solution is right in front (close to) one, but we try and make it difficult to always reach for the furthest apple on the tree!

Good luck!

I have tried the platinum white halfmoons and almost none of the breeders export to SA. Some of them only export in bulk.
Try Bryan JungleAquatics he might be your best bet.

Would you not need special permits and licensed to import?

Yip,cost is about R110.00 with a book-full of info that you must supply. There is also a 504 page checklist of what may not be imported.DTA 's head-office is in Riviera,PTA.(lucky me)

The import permits are easy to get. Just remember that you need a national permit as well as one from your province. The Dept of Agriculture will decline your application if the fish are on the Black List.
The shipping costs is the killer as well as making sure that the supplier has the correct health certificate. I went through all of this 6 months ago.
Then there are customs costs as well as airline handling fees. Not cheap!!
