The kh/carbonate hardness in my thank..
You can maybe look into something called a "Drop checker". Very usefull thing that stays in the tank to give you a co2 indication.

Where would I find one of those in Cape Town?

So water hardness determines how much CO2 you inject ?
Yes. But with a drop checker, you make up water with a specific hardness and the aquarium water hardness doesn't affect it. Thus you don't need to know your water's hardness.

What would be a desirable hardness for a community tank? Mainly tetras.
