View Full Version : Moving to a larger tank
Good Morning
I have a 40cm tank with only 2 fish and a snail
I now have a 1m tank that I would like to setup
What is the safest and correct way to move fish into and also setting up that tank
everything in the new tank is new including the sand that I am going to use which is pool filter sand I think
can I use the water in 40cm tank for bacteria
please advise
(1) Use old gravel UNDER the new gravel. Even if it's only a few handfuls. You'll be surprised how much good bacteria is in your gravel. And it can take up to 6 months to seed new substrate.
(2) Put your existing filter medium (sponges/ceramic rings) with the new filter. This will speed up the process.
(3) Use AS much of the water from the 40cm tank as possible.
(4) Get a product like seachem stability to help speed up the cycling process.
You should be able to add the fish the same day. Keep feeding to an absolute minimum. I would even recommend only once every second day. Monitor your nitrites and ammonia, and do minor water changes every alternate day until you are happy that the new tank is settled.
cool, i did that the weekend, where i used old water as well as old media. I added fish the same day and they are good. They have even gone as far as spawning.
Thanks
I was thinking using most of the water and putting the filter media in the old tank.
The substrate is the problem because its a very fine sand that wont work in the new tank due to the powerful filter and that is why pool filter sand was what I am going for
because the small tank does not have powerful media in there the fine sand never move about
any suggestions like maybe dumping some new sand in a cup or something and putting it in the old tank
will that build something
Just put a few handfule UNDER the pool filter sand. Then it shouldn't be any problem
