Thanks Reaper... Yip - these are what we call tategoi tosai (translated from Japanese: Koi for the future that is one season old)... Basicly just 2 variaties --> Kohaku(red and white) and Taisho Sanshuku or more commonly called Sanke(red, white and black) Cant wait to see these little guys(now 15 - 20 cm) pulled from my mud ponds in 6 months or so...fat gleaming and more than double their size....

yip Khalid ... arm and a leg... easy to avoid - both boreholes have been fixed and staff been threatened with no Xmas bonuses EVER again if municipal water comes within 20 meters of my ponds...

Hey azurekoi what's your take on the hikari line up of koi food,do the results warrant the price of the food?
Stunning kois btw, well the prized stuff comes from japan...buddy of mine a good few years ago went to japan and selected several koi which a few years later took grand champion at gateway some time back and other competitions
What's the differance in getting koi from japan and the ones farmed locally(not mass produced, but bred and harvested and culled and process repeated)

fishcrazy .... hikari is an excelent, easy to digest food, bet Eish, the price.... One can get a comparable food from a local Jhb company that is its equal(PM me if interested) - made by the famous Sakai family and less than half the price... only Hikari food i spend hard cash on is The hikari gold algea wafers for my Bristlenoses - that stuffs great...
I have seen some truely excelent koi come from local breeders(anybody here ever saw Ronnie Watt's hi-shushui called "Zipper"?) - some that has gone on to win best in variety or even best in size at the All Japan show... but how can some local okes fish compare to Bloodline bred koi from japan where the parent stock has been refined by breeders, often over 3 or 4 generations...? When you buy koi like this, the genetics is so stable that you KNOW what you are getting, good solid colour - excelent body shape and awesome lustre...
