Just an out of the blue question:

What is the best thermometer to use? The stick on ones that stick on the glass/plastic or the ones that actually sit IN the tank?

And where should one place it in relation to (1) the heater, and (2) top or bottom of tank?

Most aquarium thermometers are pretty bad hey... Buy 3 of any kind and they will all give you different readings. You should try keep it away from the heater. Generally I'd say the middle of the tank but unless your circulation is really bad it shouldn't make a diff.

Heehee, I noticed that when I bought one, and accitentally broke it in a clean. Without changing anything, the newer one gave me a 2 degree difference. I'm a little suspect of the stick on ones, because logic tells me that they are also reading the glass temp... when isn't what I want.

I opted to spend a little bit more on my last one, purely because it had a thicker glass casing, and "guaranteed more accurate readings."

Get a digital thermometer rather....more accurate. Costs more money but worth the investment

Ditto that :) Quicker and easier to read as well. I place all my thermometers on the opposite side of the tank to the heater.

Will be LPS hopping tomorrow. Ny new tank looks SPARSE. As I only had a 40l and now gone to a 160l, my 2 lonely plants and 4 rocks (which now look like pebbles) are not doing much for the decor.

Will check out the digitals then
