Yellowish water in my tank

The water in my new tank is turning yellowish in colour what is causing this?

I am planning a 50 % water change this weekend. Will this help?

The first photo was a few days back but I noticed the change from yesterday morning.

Are you running carbon? How long has it been in the tank?

Make sure none of your stones are leeching anything into the water - a friend had a similar problem and the stone she had placed in the tank was the problem as it was 'crumbling'.

I noticed it since yesterday morning and this morning it looked worse than yesterday.

I think the problem is with the rock on your right of the castle....that looks like a type of sand or limestone that could be leeching it's crap into the water. I also have silimiar rock in one of my tanks but that rock is completely white, so I don't have that problem.

How did you treat the stones before putting them in the water stripes???

If I may make a suggestion..remove all the stones and add a few drops of hydrochloric acid or neat vinegar to them, wait awhile and see whether they 'bubble' at all. If they do, DO NOT use them in your tank as they are unsafe. If they do not bubble, soak them in some hot water and brush them off with a wire brush making sure to get into all the nooks and crannies in order to remove any loose debris. Also make sure that you have removed all the vinegar/acid which you used for testing. Then replace them in your tank.

Yes, a water change will definitely help at this point, but we still need to figure out the cause or else it will just keep happening.

I did a water change yesterday afternoon and took out all the rock and bogwood. One of the bogwoods I took out smelled really bad. "Dit het so vrot reuk gehad" Maybe that was the problem.

I cleaned my rock with warm water and used a brush to clean it. But I am going to keep them out for now and maybe introduce one at a time just to see if it is the rock.

I took all the wood out of my other tank too. Maybe just maybe it could have been the wood.

Often new wood changes the colour of your water but causes no ill effect to the water. It will eventually go away. You can also put a Purigen bag in your filter and this will help. Carbon also works.

Gee stripes, I never even saw the wood in the tank :) That was probably your culprit. As brentnorm says, wood will almost always leech into the water - not a bad thing IF you are using safe wood. Constant water changes and carbon or purigen (as brentnorm said) will do the trick.

My tanks water is still looking good so far. For now I am going to leave it so. Planning to go to LFS and get some more plants and other stuff. Will post new photos soon.

Yeah I was about to ask when you added the wood, because the tannins in the wood make the water yellow.

Normally not as yellow as yours but still yellow.

Mine is currently quite yellow after adding wood.

i see people recommend carbon to clear the water, my cascade 200 has a huge, dare i say useless carbon insert in it that i feel does squat for the yellow stuff. it was in the filter before the purigen stuff, and the water was cloudy and yellow, purigen in, and suddenly the water is clearing wonderfully
