View Full Version : Rep power?

O.K - 1st to admit I'm new to the forum thing, but found my way round TASA pretty easily....
Just one question: What is this Rep power thing that apears in the little info box beneath one's Avatar? What does it denote? How is one awarded rep power(See I got 1 yesterday....)
Have noted that it sort of correlates with the amount of posts a member makes - 1 rep power for roughly every 100 posts(I'm just on like 60ish,less yesterday when I got mine awarded...)
Basicly, does it say anything about a member, except that he posts a lot or has been a member for an extended period of time? Who awards rep power?
Inquiring minds need to know....lol

There's a star icon at the left bottom corner of the post . . .
You can award rep to anyone . . .
Click USER CP
At the bottom of the page you should see all the posts you got rep awarded to.

Thanks for explaining that.... now maybe you can clear up another one... what about these green blocks under all our names... and when you place your cursor over them, it says something really random like "Tank master will become famous soon enough"...?

Never noticed that until now . . . :D
Hee hee.. I am "on a distinguished road"... some of them are kinda funny.
Ok, I did explain it once upon a time but I can't find that post now :(
Basically you get a tiny bit of rep for hanging around and some for posting. The main way to get rep though is from making good posts and other people clicking on the little star at the bottom left of your post and "approving" of your post. This will give/take as many rep points as the rep power of the person who gave you rep (either negative or positive). As you get more rep you get more green squares and you get more rep power.
So basically if azurekoi (rep power 1) gave me positive rep 9 times and madam (rep power 9) gave me 1 negative rep I would still be where I was. (which isn't really possible because you can't give rep to the same person too many times)
Mods/admins have a bit more rep power by default.
But what is the purpose of the rep power?
It's a better way to identify who to listen to than post count ;)
It's a better way to identify who to listen to than post count ;)
This will give you a fair way of establishing who to listen to, but you aslo get rep points for the number of posts you make, and how long you been on the forum. If you post junk all day, every day, your rep points still go up slowly... so even though your Rep Power may seem high.. you still posting junk.
Well if you're posting junk all day every day you are more likely to get a few negative reps given. It's something like 100 posts = 1 point so if you make 1000 posts you get 10 points, then someone like me give you 1 negative rating and you back to 0. If you give them a negative then they would be on -19 :p

So,guess it realy gets down to reading threads and building up a mental profile of what people say on here....I've only been a member for a week or so,but already think highly of many of you for what you say - whether it be advice to a noob or a certain sence of wit or for whatever reason....Read a thread somewhere(think by kel sol...can't find it now) where she mentions the harmonious functioning of this forum and how members help each other without the usual bitching you find in online forums...
So high rep power by a "junk" poster - should still have some clout - if they have been on here for a long time posting one liners to other peoples more lucid post's,they MUST at least have learnt something and might have a nugget of info to give...
Yip, at the end of the day if it comes down to person1 with 3 green blocks saying "do it!" and person2 with 2 or 3 green blocks saying "dont do it" you should probably do some googling or something anyway ;)
Obviously it also functions as a bit of "recognition" for those that do contribute a lot or give good info etc.

Eish, think I saw someone get zapped badly by the negative rep power thing today(That's if my partly functional photographic memory wasn't running rings round me again....lol) - word to the wise....DO THINK what you write, especialy if someone with high rep power disagrees with your point of view....

Well I for one don't mind giving advice BUT dislike the individual who wants and then spews out like he has been in the game for years using other keepers experience and passin it of as his own..........

Rep power..the scourge of all forums
ppl hardly award rep power these days :(
I don't mind giving rep power for someone that helped me. The problem is that I know so much that I almost never need help :P
You don't have to give rep power to someone who helped you, if they helped someone else or just made a good post you can give rep.

or if there are some people who are quite buddy buddy, they could give each other rep power quite regularly?
might be a bit of a flaw there.. or am i wrong?
Sort of however there's a limit like if you give me rep then you have to give to another 10 people or something before you can give me rep again.

Eish, sorry for dragging drowned cats out of the bottom of the river again...
So,rep power is a number, the bigger, the better?... What do the little green blocks beneath our onscreen nicks signify? (Mine currently sez that I am "Realy nice" - something that I object to... Worked HARD my whole life to NOT be percieved as a nice person - prefer to be called cynical and jaded...lol)
Been a member for like 4 months now and noticed that I am one of very few people on here with 3 blocks(less than 10 of us on here - only one on 4 - the Prof - as he should be...) - some people with only 2 blocks(+ with a lot more posts than me...Did they recieve negative rep or something?) that have been members for a LOT longer than me...Why? @Rory (http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/member.php?u=1) ... Could you clear this up for me/us....? Inquiring minds need to know...lol
Also a good idea to ressurect this thread as TASA has quite a few new members and have noticed that some people with"low rep power" have been giving EXCELENT advice that has been ignored by the noob asking a question... even though I have given them Rep power - their numbers dont seem to rise?
Not trying to open a can of worms with this - sorry mods, but just want to have a clear understanding of HOW this works...
PS: Does the frequency aka. posts/day have anything to do with the amount of green blocks you get - that will explain it to me... I post a LOT... Verbose, just like my mom said from the time I learned to talk...lol

I think the green blocks is compressed weed, the more you post, the more weed they give you :)
Sheesh, higher grade questions this early in the morning...
Um. The more rep/power you get the more blocks you get. When you get all your buddies to give you rep like the prof then you get a gold star noddy badge... ;)
The people that have been here longer but have less rep either just haven't received as much, or received a similar amount of times but from people with less rep power, or possibly have gotten some negative rep too. It's a bit of an under utilized feature and it's a system that works better the more people use it so it's not like it's extremely accurate but having a few blocks does lend some credibility to what you're saying.
The "sayings" like "is on a distinguished road" and "is just really nice" are just what came with the software. Each range of points has a saying thing that goes with it. It's possible to change what they say but then you have to come up with about 20 different things...
If you've given someone rep they will receive 7 points as your rep power is 7. They do accumulate these points, but you need quite a few to get another block.
Your longevity (on the forum so your age doesn't count :p) and number of posts contributes to your rep power but not your actual rep (the blocks). I see Singularity in this thread has 17 rep power vs your 7 but only 1 block vs your 3. He's been here 2 years longer though so you get some rep power automatically.

Here are the "sayings":
Negative:
User is infamous around these parts
User can only hope to improve
User has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Zero:
User is an unknown quantity at this point
Positive:
User is on a distinguished road
User will become famous soon enough
User has a spectacular aura about
User is a jewel in the rough
User is just really nice
User is a glorious beacon of light
User is a name known to all
User is a splendid one to behold
User has much to be proud of
User has a brilliant future
User has a reputation beyond repute

And some of the "numbers" behind the system:*
Every 60 days you get 1 rep power.
Every 200 posts you get 1 rep power.
Every 100 rep points you get 1 rep power.
You need min of 50 posts to have your rep be counted on someone else when you give rep.
You need min of 10 rep points to have your rep be counted on someone else when you give rep. (The default for new members is 10 rep points)
You can only give rep max 10 times a day.
You must give rep to 7 other people before you can give rep to the same person again.
*Subject to change ;)

Rory - If one has "disabled reputation",does that mean you can park your car in those spots at the door to shopping centres and can you claim a government grant?...lol

i dont know if i like all this rep stuff, i once got a bit of negative rep from someone for wishing them happy birthday.. dont know what was up with that..
also previously, you could see on your profile page who has given you your last rep, much like the mentions notifications, but now i cant find anywhere where to view who has given me my last rep points.
ok so there i've ranted a bit about that and gotten that out of my system.
mydummyname - love your title above the rep power green bars - balala shark - made my day :) :)

@Pauline (http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/member.php?u=1542) the real joke is that when i first got into fish keeping i was in love with this fish but cold not remember the name and i kept saying balala shark hehe
sorry for OT.
How does one change that name or is it given by the forum?
Settings > Edit profile > Custom User Title
Fill something in there and it will override the default one.

When I hold the mouse over your blocks Hennie it says "HennieRoux will become famous soon enough". Clearly you have moved on from the distinguished path
Try using a live mouse and let us know what happens ;)

has any found out how u can see who and for what people have added rep to ur profile??
azurekoi
24-04-2012, 14:23
It's easy for positive rep... just look on the right hand side of the rep panel under user CP... click on the green thread title and it will take you to the exact post you recieved rep for...
For neg rep...if the person did not leave his/her name.... no go for knowing who...

If you click "Settings" at the top and scroll down a bit you can see what rep you got and from what post. You've never been able to see who it is from.
