View Full Version : Betta seems a bit down...
Hi! I have had my Siamese fighter for about two months now. He is in a 30l by himself with heater and HOB filter and some hornwort. I moved his tank about a week ago as it was getting a lot of sun and the temperature started soaring in the summer afternoons. He started building a nice big bubble nest on Tuesday, but eversince he has lost his appetite and seems listless. The nest has also deteriorated.
I also bought some floating Betta food and he enjoyed it the first time, but now refuses. He used to eat Nutron Biogran small granules along with everyone else, but refuses them as well now. There are no other obvious signs of illness (fin fraying, fungus, parasites or bloat).
What could it be? Is he just sulking or is he actually sick?
Hi Ansu
I do not think that he is just sulking. In my experience bettas will show this behaviour when they are ill and even before the symptoms show.
Do a 30% water change every second day and keep a very close eye on him and his fins.
When you moved the tank how long did the filter stand outside the water?

Hi Vis! The whole operation took less than 15 min, so I don't think the bacteria deteriorated. Sad news however, it is definitely dropsy. Saw the slightly raised scales this morning. I'm not even going to try to cure it or find the cause, will have him euthenased as soon as the vet opens this morning.

Sorry to hear, but yes it would be the smart thing to do.

You could ask your vet to get you some Praziquantril(scheduled drug,so need a perscription for it....) - have had great sucsess with that in the past with Labyrinth fish....
Had Chuck euthanased. No use him suffering another week with salt baths and antibiotics as I haven't encountered any positive cure for dropsy, especially not if the scales had already started raising.
Thanks azurekoi, will try it in future. Is it the same stuff they use in mammals for intestinal worms?

Yip,that's the one...will have to go dig for the dosage, but has had about a 33% sucsess rate for me in the past....managed to save a few prize breeders like that.....Sorry bout your loss mate:(
