View Full Version : Canister Filter Too Strong

Hi Everyone

I bought a canister filter (Some Chinese brand) for a 2ft tank but it's too strong and the fish battle to swim, so I removed it and I'm currently using the normal box filter. Is there any way to lower the speed of a canister filter?

Canister filters normally have taps on the in- and outlets that you can use to regulate the flowrate.

Another way is to stock the canister quite heavily with filter material.

Well, he rather have faster filtration and clearer water than to slow the whole filtering process by stocking the media compartments heavily.

Spray bars take the force of the water and diffuses it over a lager surface area. Even though the in-tank flow is reduced, the filtration rate still remains true.

Ok, how do I make a spray bar?

I found a picture of the filter. Here it is...

But my filter didn't come with the plastic tube and that black thing at the end of it. Any idea what that is? Maybe that's the problem...

err.. thats not a cannister filter thats a power head filter

but even with those, there should be a flow rate adjuster? just look for it, its like a slider witha + and a - sign on it

Oh ok... Sorry. I did look for something like that but couldn't find anything but I'll check again tonight.

Okay clinton.wayne ..

Easy job here.

Check the diameter of the outlet. Should be 15mm or less. Go to A hardware shop and ask for PVC elbow join (R3) and pvc pipe (1/4 or 1/2 inch i think). You need 2 elbow joins and about 50cm of pipe. . .to make this. You might want to cut up a piece of wine cork and stuff it in the end or seal it with silicon. Drill small holes along the longer (Horizontal) pipe. The fewer the holes, the slower the flow pressure. If there is a nipple in the outlet for an airline . . . you might want to seal that off too.

Thanks TM.... That looks easy. :)
Is this safe to use? Will it damage the filter?
What's the reason for the nipple on the outlet?

You connect your airline and pump. . .it diffuses air so amazingly!

Oh Ok... That tanks great, where did you get the rocks from?

The rocks where from my back yard . . .the center (tall) rock is an ornament I bought (R200). Might have some rocks in the yard if you want? I did vinegar test and it's safe :)

If it comes with an airline pipe, connect it and put the filter at water level . . . presto! bubbles.

I have a Resun too, some versions don't come with the flow rate adjuster. Just follow what tank master had said, and then you should have a decrease in the current in your tank.

These are powerhead filters, but also referred to as internal canister filters, due to the canister thats attached at the bottom.

Thanks Asgar... I just got a response from Resun, China and they said that my unit can't be adjusted & I must buy a lower powered unit.
I'm going to do as TM suggested...

What is a vinegar test?

vinegar test is when you drop some vinegar onto the rock you want to use in your tank. if the vinagar bubbles, this rock is no good to use in your tank as it will mess with your PH..

Wayne you looking at this the wrong way. get rid of the fish not the canister - swap them for plecos they love the fast flow.

Thanks Khalid. I didn't think of that. What other species prefer fast moving water? Barbs?

That looks like a re-sun power head, it should have come with a flow splitter and nozel so that you can split the flow 50/50 and direct the current were you want it. That should solve your problem, if you did not get those parts with it you should go back were you bought it and ask them for it as its suppose to be packaged with the pump.

Not all the resuns come with flow splitters. Resun have a MASSIVE range

Not all the resuns come with flow splitters. Resun have a MASSIVE range

The picture he posted is the Resun SP range:

http://www.zoocentras.lt/images/Resun_SP-3800.jpg

The whole SP range down from the SP-750 up-to the SP-2500 looks exactly the same only the output levels are different. So they all come with the exact same bits. As for the cartridge attachment you buy those separately which turns it into a mechanical filter like this:
