View Full Version : Accidentaly bought BL plant, now what?!

Hi! I recently accidentaly bought what I now realise is red cabomba. It was labelled 'bunch plants' and I doubt if I will be able to return it for being blacklisted since 'bunch plants' don't appear on the BL (reasoning like the manager of that specific LFS often reasons when questioned).

I read that there are severe problems in Australia with regards to its invasive nature on top of being on our BL, so how do I safely discard of it?

While we are on the topic: what is the correct way to handle the LFS and blacklisted stuff - especially for us noobs who only realise our errors afterwards thanks to TASA?

The thing with plants is that not everyone knows how to identify them and not everyone can learn the scientific names. Even I don't know what the names of plants are. all I know is that it looks good and I'm buying it.

I'd rather bury or burn the plant.

Thanks TM, will dry and burn it. I also go 'pretty plant' (or 'that looks great for fry' in this case) and buy whatever it is, even though I know its irresponsible. Think I will make a weekend of it to compile a white list with clear pictures for myself to take with when I go shopping again. Can even post it if mods will allow?

Ansu I am sure the mods won't mind a white list with pics in fact I think it is a good idea... I wish we had a proper authority to report these guys to.

Yeah saw them having a crap load of new stock mostly blacklisted species, overstocked tanks and sick fish.

ya its a pity that the BL doesnt have the common name next to the scientific name, most of the time i cant even pronounce the names on that list... so after a while you kind of give up coz you dont know what you reading..

burn or bury should be the safest..

come to think of it.. if it gets buried in very moist almost muddy soil.. would the plant not grow? no wait, stupid question, buried means no light, so no photosynthesis, so dead plant! lol

Google them. Then you get there common names as well a pic.

Even if it did have the common names next to it, chances are you will still google them

i stil feel that if they had common names on the list it would be easier to recognise when you visit lps...

Oh sorry think im a bit confused?

Basically you want to print it out and take it with to a LPS to ID them by names?

Most LPS don't even label anything correctly....so yeah lol

lol no but i would recognise the name more easily if i see it or hear it at a LFS! i'm not about to go around with a BL in my pocket hehehehee

Most lfs just have the plants in a display with running water. no labels. the people working there generally won't be able to id the plants themself. I think you need to research and buy from people that is knowledable, not the lfs.

The biggest problem with having common name and scientific names is that in many circumstances the common name is actually incorrect, or refers to a number of plants. What some people know as common name X, in actual fact does not refer to scientific name X anymore, but scientific name B. So it's very difficult to marry the 2 on a list. This is how a lot of the LPS stores get away.

What about some plants looking like others . . .grass and a certain Echinodorus . . .
