Firstly thanks to Donny for the NEW tank.... :-)
and Guido for transporting and giving me great advice.

TANK SIZE 1,8 x 800 x 800

SUMP = 182L
TANK = 1152L
Combined = 1334L

So here goes the idea with progress pictures below (Should be an Interesting build)

1) Position the tank in Place in the garage (will be its final resting place with a twist)

2) remove paint from back of tank as this is going to be an in the wall tank - looking through from the kitchen.

3) Clean Tank, fittings & Fixtures - re silicone the plumbing for the sump (it has an in and out hole)

4) Do a test fill / check for leaks

5) Coming soon ... Cut Hole through wall into Kitchen - if you look at the picture below you will see the big red block will be cut out and inside that wall is my kitchen... (Guido please help)

6) Install Lintel and Move tank into wall cavity - The sump and stand will then sit in the garage

Looks like a mess so far - but watch this space!!!

Hi D
Great pleasure!!! (-:
Will pop by, maybe even tomorrow to have a quick look at the wall and tank
Remember that you have to change the stand slighty, ( new wholes and shortened metal frame).
I guess you tested the "plumbing" silicon and its all fine and no leaks:eek:

That would be great - give me a sms or call....

and you won't believe I tightened the plumbing slightly on the right and NOW no leaks only using those washers

Put 5 cm of water in on Sunday and has not lost a drop :-)

BUT I think I'm going to silicone anyway - I think safer in the long run....

I think you can start to put a add in gumtree to swop you car for a bakkie, b4 you start to collect the sand and drift wood for that mini pool:blink1:

This will be a super thread to follow. Being the builder... I'm looking forward to seeing the part where you knock the hole in the wall. That's always the "fun" part... and putting in that lintel.

Um... I've got some "bad" news for you. When you put a lintel in... I'm assuming it's a 2.1m lintel... you need to prop it in the middle to hold it up whilst the dagga dries. The "bad" news is you should prop it for 14 days... but because you not building above the lintel, prop it for 7 days. Then plaster. (If you remove the prop too early, you stand the chance of cracks between the new lintel and existing brickwork.

Yes... I also wouldn't trade that car in for a bakkie. (Unless maybe the new chevvy bakkie! which I personally saw take a subaru apart on the drag straight last year! HEHE)

I know this is a bit off topic- but I'm sure a lot of the other members would be interested too... what it the reason behind every Subaru Owner spoiling their absolutely magnificent car with all those vinyls? Does it make the car faster? Does it make the driver feel like a racing car driver? Or is it just the Subaru Culture?

Regards

Lol and Lol...

Ok here goes - Luckily Guido (not only a ZOO keeper but also built half my house - did a custom lintel for my garage - spans 5 meters (so I thnk we can handle 2 m :-)

For the car - Not sure if people will understand this - but I'm just having a laugh... (and not to forget my car is pretty pimped out - upgraded etc etc etc )

Kids love the stickers - they thinks it's playsattion in real life!

and if u manage to get this tank to look like Mr Amano's tank.... i wont know what to say!! hehe

those plants in that tank are pretty low maintenance plants though.. so if u go that route, it'll defn be easier on the maintenance:)

i think the mainpoint on that tank was the scape and size of everything..

Dangerousd any updates and pics off your new tank??

dangerousd
12-10-2010, 14:48
OK so quick update....
Here goes for a quick update on the tank.... seems like step 3 and 4 are taking a pretty long time!!!

3) Clean Tank, fittings & Fixtures - re silicone the plumbing for the sump (it has an in and out hole)
a) Cleaned the tank and re siliconed the plumbing
b) Found out that the support braces only allowed the tank to be filled like 70% because the braces are directly above the sump plumbing - so had to use a basin curve plumbing bit to go round the the brace (worked out ok I think)
c ) Some of the plumbing was white some blue - so I painted it all black with pond paint - looks better I think!

4) Do a test fill / check for leaks / Check sump / install spray bars / test again / test again
a) Filled the tank - all seemed ok ...
b) Connected the pump and split the water flow (cause I want to do 2 return spray bars - 1 at the bottom of the tank to stop debris from settling - 1 at the top as per normal
c) Realized the side glass of the sump broke while I was placing in the cabinet....

2 FIXES I have had to do so far
1) replace the glass sump with 3 plastic tubs
2) where I joined the plumbing there is a small leak somewhere - need to tighten all the fixtures (or maybe another coat of pond paint to seal) OR Both

5) Coming soon ... Cut Hole through wall into Kitchen - if you look at the picture below you will see the big red block will be cut out and inside that wall is my kitchen... (Guido please help)

Hmmm- not actually sure - found it just outside my house on my neighbours pavement (like a bush that had grown been cut back - then died)
It has a cool shape!

Where do you get massive pieces of drift wood from - I like the shape of that piece - here are some more views (soaking in my pool)

I would also love to know if you can soak it in a pool, would save so much hassle.... ive heard you can soak it in the pool for the most part but then ensure you soak it in fresh / dechlorinated water before putting it in your tank.... would like confirmation though as ive never tried !

NOW - how do I FIX this ADVISE PLEASE??
IS it possible to remove the whole bottom piece and just replace?
ASk a pro? my LPS does tank building

OR break it apart build the rest of the tank our of concrete and just use 1 piece as a front of the glass / viewig section?

oh no.. well i have heard ppl using another piece of glass at the bottom (same size as the bottom piece glued with silicone).. to "seal" the crack..silicone is aplied to the crack and around the glass.. but those were small tanks and given the size of ur tank.. i dono if that'll help..

sorry man

take it to a tank builder and they should be able to sort u out with a new base and a rebuild..

dangerousd
19-10-2010, 15:08
I think replace is KEY .... as the weight is already rather heavy....

My other debate is should I go with drilled sump holes again in the bottom
That is where the weak spot was....

and with no holes they can brace right to the ends - the current was braced just up to the hole - hmmmm

Donny
19-10-2010, 15:09
Personally would rather get tank builder to come out to you and rebuild it were it must stand.
If you get a base that is drilled again , get then to place a peace of glass around the hole that is also drilled, therefore also braced.

Hey Zoom thanks - BUT - Used to live in Fourways - Now in CT - Hout Bay side

I know Sams Constantia actually built this tank in the begining... so maybe take it back to them...?

---------- Post added at 16:10 ---------- Previous post was at 16:10 ----------

Anpther question is - how difficult would it be to do it myself....

Get the exact size of galss cut + some braces .... remove the base and silicone the new piece on

I have done it before with my 250l tank - was not so hard
(not sure with big tank)

Just make sure when you drill the hole that for instance it is a 50mm hole it should be ATLEAST 50mm away from the sides of the glass (if that makes sense)

Your tank can be fixed by placing another piece of 10mm glass on top af the base. What I would do is to get a piece of glass cut to fit inside on the base and about 500mm long, clean out the old silicone properly and then use Bostik Marine silicon to stick the new piece on the base.
I think the reason why the base cracked in the first place was because of the long stand pipe. I would biuld in an overflow box which is much safer if anything like that should happen again.

i would replace the entire base with TWO sheets of glass cut to the exact same size... if of course i could cut glass, or build tanks in the first place heheeheheee

seriously tho.. use two sheets of 10mm or 12mm glass completely stuck together with silicone.. it will be worth the peace of mind dude..

Whipme
22-10-2010, 09:43
With a project of this size I wouldn't cut corners. Rather go all out. If it was 10mm glass before, go for 12mm, braced all round, and use an overflow instead of drilled glass. You even get some really nice hang on overflows if you want to keep the look clean. Kudos for taking on the Amano scape, I'd love to do that! Oh, and don't forget that Mr Amano has Angels in that tank of his, and they're a brilliant showpiece. If you're stocking tetras you'd most likely want to avoid angels though, and get 5, 7, or 9 Clown Loaches. They'll make the tank so much livelier! Oh, and I can't say it enough, get a good cleanup crew! That means some Otocinclus for the algae, and Corydoras for the substrate. I'd say you'll need about 12 Otos for a tank that size.

and then an idea I have for a filter / sump (4 plastic buckets) - just 2 in now as a tester (all connected with 50mm pipe)
1) Bioballs
2) Matala matting / roof insulation / filter material
3) Ceramic Rings / etc
4) Return pump

Gives you 200 liters of filtereed water.. ? :-)

Dude, you must be so relieved now the hard graft's done....Congrats!!!

Just a word on your filtration... The Ultra Zap inline pressurised filter you got was designed to run inline after a Sandfilter that acts as primary mechanical filtration... Without it,longterm you might run into some snags with bacteria dying of due to to much sludge... Pack a thick wad of "batting" in the top of it to act as some kind of prefilter, that will help...

And yaeh...What is gonna go into this bad boy? Inquiring minds would like to know

You 100% spot on with that filter - I stuff the first section with roof insulation then add some bio balls
Then open up and just replace the roof insulation..... I miught use it just as a final cleaner for the water so on return from sumpo through the bio filter (just filled with roof insulation) Just to give it that final sparkle :-) might be over kill

100000% going to do the whole wall in a black slate or concrete type large tile - so the tank should be seamless....

Will cover probably 1/2 the aluminium frame all round (might give it soe nice depth as well :-)

Eish koi pond filtration....now thats another can of worms...(not hijacking the thread - YOU asked...)

Works like any filtration - you GOT to have an efficient form of mechanical filtration before your biological filtration...Many people use sandfilters followed by The Ultra Zap biofilters, but I'm more of an in ground, through flow chamber filter kinda guy - 3 chambers -->1st with brushes, other 2 with biomedia of choice...Chambers should hold about 20 - 25% of volume of pond and have a turnover rate of once every hour to two hours of the pond volume through the filter...

Bit more high tech - I hold a patent on a Vortex filter and the bio media that goes inside... These I have manufactured and all my ponds in my shop run on these(+ Chamber filration...)...Each filter is both mechanical(Vortex or spinning motion of water seperates the solids) and biological(think of a cross fused bunch of "sinkplaat" and you get the picture) - Each unit comfortably filters 20 000liters and a simple 5 second flush /day gets rid of all the waste solids...QED

Not a huge fan of a Sand filter - seen to many things go WRONG with it over the years, leading to total wipe out's of ponds... + the maintanance on them is a killer....

Will take some pics later and post - easier than explaining in words...

dangerousd ... Sounds like a good setup - love matala matting, brill stuff...
shihr ... Yeah,do the same in my vortexes... not only extra oxygen, but the "lifting" action of the bubbles remove dead bio film(that rust brown gunk on your bio media) from your bio media, ensuring a constantly regenerating and ammonia hungry bacterial bio film..

Hi D
good flow is ok but you have to give the bacteria enough time to do there job so too much is no good

Hi Azurkoi
Just a question isn't that flowrate quite high? And why such a high flow rate? If the mechanicle cleaning of the water is good would a slower turnaround time not be more efficient??

azurekoi
15-12-2010, 12:17
Nope Guido ---> maybe just the way I expressed it,but 10 to 20 times slower filtration than what we employ in our aquariums... You look to take the whole pond's vlume thru the filter only once every one to two hours....

Hey TP

Right Now I have 8 Bulbs (2 x 90 cm T5 high Out out)
Basically the 1 90cm coer the left and 1 the right ( 4 bulbs each side)

I'm using the bulbs that came with the lights which are 6500k rated on the white bulbs (not sure about the blue)

But I have 2 life Glow T5 btubes that I will chnage out with the blues (I think )

So will be left with 6 White / 2 blue (the life glow tubes - 1 is rated at 6500k the other 1200k)
this is what I can remember off the top of my head - I need to double check the k rating

I might even add another 8 tubes... or cfl spots in the long run (depending on Budget)

Looking good ! That frame reminds me of the Sultan of Brunei’s collection of tanks at his palace, which I had the privilege of checking out on a work trip several years back, they were embossed in real gold and incredibly ornate and almost distracted you from the tank itself. This included a long row of one meter high vertical tanks with stunning arowanas, all the colours of the rainbow – pinks, blood reds, greens, blacks, golds, some with yellow tails and even shades of blue, each costing mega bucks which only he could afford. Sorry bud, for getting off the topic of your post!

One small thing, I note your Boyu magnetic cleaner is stored on the glass. With your filter circulation this can trap debris and grit and the next time you use it you will suddenly wonder where the scratches come from! Word of warning - take it off between cleans and even wash it a couple of times during a big glass clean. I learnt the hard way!
Better still throw it away and use your credit card, preferably an expired one, lol !

'Bling’ is cool and contemporary so no problems with that bud, but 29 carat gold.. well that’s a bit over the top !

Hey dangerousd (http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/member.php?1112-dangerousd) very nice setup, I usually hate doing dishes but at your home I'd make an exception, although I cant guarantee how clean the dishes would be .

Anyway I was wondering how u do maintenance in terms of the tank. I noticed there are rocks on the gravel so I guess you don't do vacuum cleaning?

Perhaps we should rather start a Sultan's fish tank/keep on dreaming thread, but just as a taster, found this pic from one of his palaces on the web.

Hey Good_Times ... thanks dude.......
Lucky I have a dishwasher :-)

MAINTENACE .. Hmmm
I have my own little setup going

I use a wave maker (seen botom right) where the rocks are to circulate the water & sht up to the sump inlet (top back right)
SO kind of self cleans .... Then water changes.. the tank is so deep I can really vacuum the bottom so I kind of stir up the water then suck it out as per normal

BUT this was with no plants (or vey little plants)

Have to be more careful now

My substrate is actaully BLACK SEA SAND
and seems to move easily
