Hey,

I've setup my new aquisition (4ft Boyu)
using an anti chlorine product which states
the water is ready for fish immediately. I
do however want to add some colonies
of my current mature tank to the new tank
before transferring my fish.

Here is the catch, I do not want
to add water from the previous setup
as I want to get rid of the tannins that leeched
into the water.

Do I add some ceramic rings / bio balls
from the mature tanks' sump to the
new setup cannisters filter?

Must I "pollute" my new crystal
clear water with some of the old water?

Must I add some of the gravel? I want to
move away from silica as I found some nice
natural pebbles.

I intend to boil the driftwood this time
before adding them, laying it in water takes
too long.

Any thoughts?

Can I add the media tonight,
let the new system run a day with the
media and add fish tomorrow?

I then have to empty the old tank,
move it outside for collection, empty the new
tank into the old empty one, move it into the old ones'
position and then move the water from the old to the
new tank in its' new position.

There is only one place in my lounge
where it can go and the fully filled 5 ft
is sitting there.

Any other solutions?

Almost like moving the the cabbage, the goat
and the lion over the river in one boat.

Eish

Cheers

Hi

If the water in your Boyu is brand new then i would put in mature water you need some good bacteria in there - buy seachem purogen for the colour - very exp though.

Thanks,

I can't seem to find it though,
I've asked two LPS in Lynnwood/Garsforntein
area and all I get is a puzzled look.

just get 2 bags of activated carbon for the new tank with old contents
it will clear it up in less than a day and i smuch cheaper than purigen and lasts about a month

Add existing gravel, and existing filter medium. (Rings/bioballs/sponges) etc. I wouldn't stress to much with adding the water... altho the water is cycled... I don't think it contains huge amounts of necessary bacteria, as this is usally found in the gravel and filter.

Purigen will remove the tannins from the water, an if the water is clear already, and you plan on treating the wood before adding it, why waste the money on purigen when it's not going to be utilized

I wont say that purigen is ever a waste of money, it helps alot with the over all quality of your water, i will never run a display tank without it again, a really awesome product. Just transfer the filter media from the sump to the canister, the tank will still go through a cycle though, maybe some seachem stability will help although i am not a fan of any instant "cycle products"

Thanks for the advice.

I've added some ceramic balls
and a piece of filter wool from the
existing setups' sump to the cannister
filter.

The filter wool I kept some of the
excrement to feed the colonies
in the ceramic rings.

I've also added my battle hardened
pioneer mollies to the new tank, which
is as clear as glass.

No way I'm adding that old
pee stained water!

Tonight I'll fill a 40l container
with some of the old and some
of the new tanks' water, add the
fish to this, drain the old tank,
move the empty old tank outside,
empty the new tenk into the empty
old tank, move the empty new tenk,
to the old tank spot, fill the new tank
with water stored in the old one
and add fish, which will by this time
be acclimatised (parameters are the same)
excuding the tannins.

Easy:evil:

I agree with zoom, not alot of bacteria will be in the water, adding the bio balls was a good move that should do it, also purigen is a ammonia absorber and as far as i know will now help with tannins, (well im not sure) but what i do know is activated charcoal works like a charm, polishes the water up really good,
