1600L???
NICE!!!!
How about any pics, and maybe outline your tank intentions?

Besides all constructive advice sofar , you MAY ALSO do this:

Invest in Seachem Purigen (http://www.waterzoo.co.za/seachem-purigen-100ml-bag-p-162.html?cPath=20)
4 * 100mL BAGGED units, will be perfect.

Place in a dedicated high, flow-through area, around 800L/h minimum.
Hang-on-back, or canister filters offer optimal placement.

You should have nearly 30% visibility within 24h.

Once, Purigen has changed colour to dark, coffee-brown...remove and recharge.
Instructions are supplied with product.

You continue in this manner.
Assuredly within 4weeks or so, you can be relieved of MOST Dissolved Organics contributing to darkly stained aquarium water.

SO. besides :-
Water changes - always a good thing, but not when excessive and environmentally unsound.

Activated carbon- easily exhausted, no direct indication besides water clarity.

Running Water - Possible contamination of local water bodies with aquarium pathogens. We sterilise wood for tank use, should apply both ways.

Pretreatment - heat/boil and soak, sun-dry tannin-laden wood - energy, time and water intensive.

Combine above; and/or rely on Seachem Purigen
To POSITIVELY IMPACT WATER CLARITY, CHEMISTRY, AND QUALITY

I tackled 1.6m LONG, 1.4m DEEP, 1m WIDE, ALROUND VIEW, 1900L with > 90kg mopani wood
(Pieces upto 1.5m * 80cm)
with 5 Purigen UNITS

INITIALLY - Couldn't see through tank, at all!

....Resolved blackwater into gin-clear water in under 1month
Purigen services retained, and 40% waterchange every 2nd month

BTW. Your end result will be achieved :noworry:. You have to factor in your initial wood mass, leaching rate, water volume, Purigen flow-through rate as well as recharge interval.

Hope this helps:bigsmile:

Real useful tip or SALES PITCH - Not sure whic one

My opinion.....keep it natural. I personally don't like adding chemicals to my water if some simple water changes + patience will do the trick.

Cheers

Purigen isn't really "adding chemicals to the water". It's more like souped up carbon... (except rechargeable)

Take my advice guys,: A large amount of carbon is going to get rid of stains, however a LARGE amount of carbon is in no way good for fish

Hi Altum, you say this product is rechargable. How many time can you recharge it before its all worked out?

Sure Daniel, it WAS your tank volume, wood size/mass and problem that caused me to volunteer info above.:blink1:

Purigen is NEVER TOTALLY worked out or used up.

A period of around 6months, covers AS MANY RECHARGES YOU REQUIRE.
Again, if it's more for colour removal, as well as Nitrogen control...then Purigen slowly loses SOME of it's capacity.
For water clarity, it works far longer.

I still have some bags in use almost 7years down the line. That is exceptional, but you get the idea. The beads still bleach to near-white after recharge, and water clarity superb.

After 6mth, decide whether you want to "top-up", your Purigen by adding a new amount.
Maybe remove an older unit to a smallertank?
It's always useful to know, that you can.

You don't THROW IT AWAY, you just safely assume that volume/capacity diminishes.
eg. 400L unit will work on 300L after 6months, and maybe 200L after 1year.

It thus is brilliant, in it's simplicity, functionality, virtues, immediate and long-term economics.

Anymore questions?

Have you gone to www.seachem.co.za (http://www.seachem.co.za) ?
There's a FAQ page, and detailed info.
