View Full Version : Desperately needing advice!!! (tank build)
Hi everyone. Im new here and am needing some expert advice. Its been years since I had an aquarium, i have just been given some glass the dimensions are: 2.5m x .750 x .600. The glass is all cut to size but my problem is that it is only 8mm thick. The guy that gave it to me was intending on building it for himself but due to some issues he no longer could go ahead with the build. He advised me that with proper reinforcing with glass that the 8mm glass would be thick enough..... i have a some doubts but would really appreciate it if some of the members with tank building experience could give me some advice.
Hope someone can help.

Braces shoulds be in the middel and the ends or along the length of the tank.

Your Doubts are correct.Minimum should be 12mm.Suggested 13mm.
BTW. do not use Laminated Glass.
12mm Laminated Glass is actually 2 6mm with a piece of plastic in between them.
hi jaques ... thank you for the quick response. Thanx for the link i will go check it out. This is not laminated glass its just a single piece. Damn i was really hoping that with the correct reinforcement i could keep it this size
Wait, all is not lost!!!
You can build a Riparium. I just saw one on another forum an hour ago:

The guy converted a normal 125 gallon tank to have very shallow water and lots of beatiful plants growing above the water column. It would make for a stellar display tank in 2.5m.
Those are quite in style at the moment. Have seen awesome looking ones.
Hey guys not a bad idea at all ... thank you whipme. Gonna look int something like that. Either that or split the glass up and make two 1.75m tanks. Thank you for the feed back.
I called the one guy that builds tanks for the local pet shops and he says with the right reinforcement it can be done but i still have BIG BIG doubts
