View Full Version : Does your boss know??
I'm noticing a trend here..... Between the hours 8am to around 16h00.... this forum is on fire...... and it tapers down drastically around 17h00....
What are you guys doing at work??

lol........
We are chilling... O sorry i speak for myself.
Nice 1 Cheetah, some people are not that busy and others I guess just multi-task.
Most companys don't block this site, not on the blacklist lol.
So I guess the boss doesn't know.

no i dont - yes i would have a problem....
Fortunately this site seems under the radar for now. I know MASA has made it onto some block lists... (I might just register another domain or something is tasa gets blocked :p)
Where I work you can browse facebook or whatever, as long as your work gets done. The 55mb internet connection helps...
Thankfully my boss allows me to go online when I have no work to do :)
Well, the work internet is open for me all day as I sometimes need to do research so I usually multi task my browsing or when waiting for code to compile. And I also have to make sure that my work for the day is done at the end of the day.
I have 5 browser windows open all the time, and boss knows , as long as i get the work done before deadlines they happy.
As long as the work is done, I can do what I want.
I am a FIRM believer in 2 principles.
If your work is finished. Go home. My boss isn't quite in agreement here, and feels that if you finished your work you should find something to do. In this case I TASA. But I honestly feel that if you are 100% complete all your cycles for the day, why not go home? If this is happening 4 times a week, every week, then you need to relook at your work and take on more responsibility.
The second principle I believe in is if your office work can be done at home, and you are a person of integrity and can actually get the work done at home.. then do the work at home. My boss is slowly coming around to this idea, and has actually noticed that sometimes i am more productive when I work form home. At times he has even ASKED me to go work at home, and not bother coming into the office after site visits.
Then TASA is also easier!

Wel our internet has been blocked and u need a password to access, wich i don't have so i'm using somebody elses. So i can only go onto the net when that person has gone home wich is 4 o'clock. So i guesse the boss does not know. Gives me little time on the forum tho.

I would usually only visit the forum in office time from my work PC if I'm expecting PM (Wish I could get pm's direct to email since outlook is open all day?)
Otherwise I sometimes visit after 4.30 knockoff timewhile waiting for my lift, rest of the time its opera mini access... I still need a home internet solution (that doesn't include or rely on line rentals and telkom wires)
Ferryman,
If you go to your user profile, you can update to have PM's sent to email, but you have to log into TASA to reply to them
I would like to work from home and my boss is all for it. But because I'm a senior, I have to be there the train and help the juniors...

thanks Zoom, I went and checked my setting on just after i posted that remark, at least I'll get my pm's without needing to log just to check

Just please do not go to Neotel... They are horrible!
My boss does not mind but the work has to be finished before I get to play on the forums....lol

Considering i am in a family business and i own part of it....im free to roam the net lol
I generally find that people who can operate a forum competently, are generally efficient and thus more than likely good workers who can multitask and have time to sit on forums because they do their jobs well.
The Facebook people, not that bunch is useless :)
I also did my occasional peep at what's going on on the forums and other internet areas I frequent & change the page when the boss enters.... but... now... with me retiring in October I have one project left to do which would take me about another week to do.... (so much time so little to do).... I do not even mind when he walks into the office & checks my screen when I'm not busy....
I also notice that this trend is very apparent over weekends.... when you'd expect it to be busy on the forum.... it is relatively quiet.... I just wonder how much work gets done during the week??.....
Quick...everbody hide, the boss is coming...

work from home most of the week , have to go in maybe two or three times, so at home most of the time, inet is part of the package atm. for advertising and email etc. i tend to go out later in the afternoon , when you guys are working, you never get a lunch break or day off , so i have to run around from 3pm - 630 or 7pm . and random times on weekends. Dont bosses understand if you want to move house you have to see a new house?
that said the office bound staff tend to sit on fb and youtube most of the time when i am there. used to be in a different position and found it better for me to finalise files after everyone left. used to be maybe a week a month of leaving after 730pm.

My boss takes the view that as long as the work gets done, the odd 5 minutes on the internet here and there is fine.
So I have a peak at the forum now and then.
My colleague over the desk from me.......some of the websites she visits have been blocked.

When I was at university, somebody once told me the following. Doesn't only apply to exam technique. I apply it at work too.
It's called the 80-20 rule. 80% of the work in 20% of the time.
So if you get most of the work done as quickly as possible, that gives you some "flexi" time at the end.

Indeed I do!
If you come in under budget, the boss can hardly get annoyed that you are chatting about your beloved fishies for 10 mins. :smokin:

I made this post almost 2 years ago... and I guess I have motivated my boss enough.I work most mornings from home until around 10h00. Then I go on my site inspections, site meetings, supplier meetings... basically anything needed to be done "out the office" and then back home by 3... working. And I have to agree with reedfish 100% on the 80:20 rule. You will be HORRIBLY surprised how much work you can do if you are not distracted, and more importantly, not trying to stretch the work out over a long period of time. What I do in a few hours working at home I couldn't get done in a week at the office.

Rory.....you don't even want to know. :handkiss:
But this is another issue entirely
I could never work from home.
Too many distractions. The fish for one.
And my kids would never leave me alone to get on with what I have to do.
I like the fact that I leave home, come to the office, and at the end of the day, go back home, hopefully leaving my work behind me.
Twitter
Facebook

They are usually the culprits
(And probably anything with "xxx" in the title)

I like this too. I used to work from home and you just always have this feeling that at whatever time your boss just might call and ask for something etc. Even during working hours at home it's like can't go out unless it's quick/during lunch or even go away from the pc too long etc.
Am I the only one wondering what kind of sites this colleague visits? :D
Could well be TASA.... I know it is blocked on my company server..... I take my own modum to work and log into my own internet and my own cost.....
