View Full Version : Algae eaters
Hi All
I'm looking for fish that will do a decent job cleaning up some diatoms and a bit of algae here and there. I don't like the Chinese algae eaters and I'm not a huge fan of plecos (they get a bit big).
Any recommendations? Also where can I buy? – there seems to be a total stock shortage in all the shops near me.
Someone mentioned otocinclus but I haven’t seen any available.
Cheers

Hi Byron, otos are good, so are Siamese Algae Eaters. Maybe PM Dolphin, I think that he may have some available.

What size is your tank, Byron, and what other fish are you keeping in the tank? From there it can be easier to establish what kind of algae eater you can have.
Also, the algae may be an indication of one or two things - your lights might be on for too long each day, which can lead to extra algae growth. You also might be giving the algae too many nutrients - feeding fish too much or overstocking your tank, or even having too much stock in relation to your filtration can all lead to excessive nitrogenous wastes in the water, which algae will feed on.
Thanks bro
- you are the same Schloshd from the other forum which I shall not mention but it deals with another fishy subject entirely?

I think it may be a result of a bit of over feeding but I have some hungry fish.
10 hours of light a day
Julwel 120 (can't remember the model)
Mostly tetra's couple cory's and four fat tiger barbs.
The diatoms are a result of it being a newish tank although all of the filter media, substrate and water were transfered from an old tank - shortcut I know but I didn't have a choice. The fish are all pretty happy. The algae growth is minimal.

Yes, that's me. Good to have you on here bud.
Yeah, trying to get involved in a new community. Should be good.
Cheers
Don't stress about the diatoms. They clear up in a few weeks in any case.

they just look a bit nasty and I want to make them something else's food.
