I am using river sand that you get from the local hardware store. I found that the plants love it.

That is a good find.

i have added some rockes and plants but the water is still a bit milky from the extra sand i had to add. Could plant people help my name the plants i have in the tank. I will take better pictures when the water has cleared.

umm.. correct me if im wrong but i dont think those stalky plants in the back ground are aquatic plants? :(

Milsky

Yip they are a type of bamboo... I had a few and really liked them but they are non aquatic...you will find that you are sold a LOT of non aquatics out there... the ones on left and righ look like java ferns, which should not be planted in sand (also made this mistake origionally) but rather tied to your rocks...looks even better. Just use some sewing cotton and wrap it around the 'roots' and rock, over time they will grow onto the rock...

So non aquatic plants can live under water? like Aquatic plants? without problems? i thaught they might rot, or die ?

no they cant. they sell these semi aquatic plants as aquatic plants.. and unsuspecting ppl (like me long ago) will buy them and have them rot in their tanks :(

most of these plants that are semi aquatic sold as aquatic plants can be planted with the roots submerged but not the whole plant:( have to do some research to be sure..

even worse is when they sell u a plant that isnt even aquatic at all!

I have 8 Mbuna Malawis. trying to take photos but they are still to shy. 4 khuli loaches and a high fin pleco.

I am using the Jewel filter that comes with the tank but will be adding a tetra 700 external cannister filter for more filtration.

Just a small update. I have rearranged the rocks and plants and the fish are loving it but i am having a problem with finding rocks that aren't to heave to stack. Does anybody know where i can get rocks like that in durbs and not have to spend a fortune?

SalmonAfrica

Have you tried a garden centre? They sell all sorts of rocks, and normally not at a bad price either. Just make sure that they haven't been painted, don't have any cement in them, and give them a good rinse before adding.

Ok so un update is in order. A lot has changed. The malawie's just were not working for me, so now i have angels, black and neon tets, mollies, khuli loaches and high fin plecos. I am having a problem with BBA but the mollies and angels are loving it and keeping under control so i am not to worried. The water is still a bit merky because i just added the large wood, plants are looking scares because i just trimmed them down.
