New and hoping to learn lots!
Just wanna say hi to all!
I am sooo excited I came across this site!

Hope to learn more on Tropical tanks....

WARNING:
I have got my tank for 3 years now, started with baby parrots, silver dollars, catfish, pintail sharks, eal, Plec and two kissing gouramis. Never had one problem!

They grew, got so big and became like kids in my house. I bought a valcanic rock at a shop (so tempted to tell where - as the dude had such a bad attitude when I told him) cause my two Parrots where making a nest. Two weeks later my 2 Parrots, Plec and One Pintail Shark died. I was devastated! I took out the rock as that was the only difference in my tank for three years. I went back being very nice about it and got the worst response after I told him just to stop selling these rocks before more heartache!

Then I thought maybe it wasn't the rock. I took the rock and put it in my pond yesterday ... and today all my goldfish is dead!

I don't understand it as I had it in Boiling water etc.... I will be getting rid of this Stupid Volcanic rock! Now nothing is the same, the water get dirty quicker and the No3 test high the whole time and it looks like there is something growing on the glass! How can I get everything back to normal?

Thanx :)

I'm guessing the rock leeched something.pour some vinigar on the rock and see if it bubbles.if it does it is leeching and shouldn't be placed into a fishtank or a fishpond.

volcanic rock has iron and few other stuff in them and can leech into your water, to be sure you can take the rock to a laboratory near you that they can test it and tell you and then you can held the LFS accountable for your lost or their supplier. We also got volcanic rock here in Swakop and I didn't experience any problems so far but may bee you got a bad piece like Stormer said test it with vinegar.

Can you take a picture of said Volcanic rock? Might be smelter slag. Some LFS's have been selling this a Volcanic rock and rock for marine -

Thanks guys! will test it and take a pic. It just really upsets me when they don't give a crap and just want money even after I told them what happened and they should rather not sell it! Where is the love for these little creatures ???

Where is the love for these little creatures

Hi And welc:Dme, you will not find it at the LPS.
If you pour the vinegar on wait a few minutes because it sometimes have a delayed reaction.

Hi and welcome to the forum
Sorry to hear about your lose, as Vis said the LFS does not care what happens to the fish just as long as they make thier money. I hope we can help you get your tank back on track with out any more losses.

I have the exact same type of rock in my tank. Just a different shape of course.

I've had it in there since i started about 5-6 months ago and I had no problems. I had a couple of fish deaths but that was one at a time from some mysterious cause and the deaths were quite some time apart.

But as it was said, It could be a be a "bad batch"

"Still learning" we all are .. thanks for posting the pic - this is not what I had in mind when I mentioned slag ... I actually have no clue is this is natural or man made.

But this does pose a question to ponder. How to cure hard scape material?

I mean we are all quick to boil, soak and sink wood, but what about other scaping material. Should we just trust substrate from the LFS, or that car, rock ...

Wonder what would the best way be - treat them all like wood? Boil, soak and sink?
