Hey. I want to add a sump to my tank but all the glass shops i have been to can only drill up to 6mm. Any suggestions of where to go. I don't really want to go the gravity route as we all know Eskom by now. Thanks.

DIY. All you need is a diamond bit holesaw in the required diameter. And then make sure the side you drilling is kept wet.

Or contact your LFS

Will try the LFS. My fiance wont leave a diamond tip drill alone.

try builders .I got one for about R200 a while back.very easy to do .just keep the drill on the lowest speed and keep the glass wet with a peace of putty in a volcano shape around the bit.
check you tube for vids
good luck

Got a 25mm drill bit. It was only R145. LFS wanted to charge me R267 for 2 holes. I have been watching a few videos and I recon I will mange. Will keep you posted if I still have a tank by tomorrow.

I would suggest making the outlet bigger that 25mm, unless you are going to drill two outlet holes.

An easy way to keep the hole saw in position is to stick a 20 - 25 mm Styrofoam where you want to drill. Then lightly drill into the Styrofoam - remove the disc and add water while drilling the glass - the Styrofoam is an in place template that will stop the bit from running all over the place .. drilling glass is a slow process if you do not have a drill press and loads of running water.

This Styrofoam trick should also work with your 25mm drill bit.

Will try that. Just waiting for my glass to arrive. The back of the tank broke a while back so now at least I'm gonna have 2 tanks. Wont one 25mm hole be big enough?

It all depends on the amount of water being pumped from the sump into the tank. The outlet must be able to let that volume of water flow out of the tank without backing up. If it does back up, the tank will overflow. Better safe that sorry. How are you planning on setting up the outlet from the tank to the sump?

Its just basically going to fall out of the tank, with a pipe, into the sumps first compartment on top of the filter sponge.

No . the average flow that a 25mm pipe will do with no help from a pump is 0.49L/s with is 29.4L a min which equalls to 1764L an hour . So depending on the size of your return pump i think you are cutting it fine

I would go 32 or 50 mm as the plumbing pipes and bends are easier to get and glue in that size
where as 25mm is normaly harder to get and mostly sprinkler type that dont respond well to pvc glue .
just my 2 cents .good luck anyways

My pump is rated at 2000L an hour. I catch your drift. Will go get a bigger drill, eish! I wonder if they will take the other one back. At least its not opened.

Ok. So i just came back from builders, exchanged that one for a 40mm drill. Luckily they got stock this morning because yesterday 25mm was the biggest. I also decided to by a new drill and grinder, will regret it later.

32 or 50mm would have been better, you not going to find 40mm PVC fittings easily

I first got the PVC fittings and then i went back to the drill department and got the drill. So I'm hoping all works out well.

Builder's ALWAYS have stock of 40mm fittings. It's more common in the building industry than the 50mm

My job REQUIRES me to shop at builder's frequently! You know you a builder's addict when you stop at the builder's over weekends to get just a boerewors roll for lunch whilst you taking the wife out shopping!

HAHA. Sounds like me. I can get lost in there, unfortunately my money as well. So i drilled the hole and am glad to say that i still have a tank and i am the proud owner of a brand new 40mm hole in the bottom of my tank. The pipes I got also fit perfect so now to go on to building the sump. Thanks for all the advice. Every bit helped.
