View Full Version : Feeding.....
Hi Everyone,
This may come as a silly question to you, but I need to know what the correct feeding routine is in a community tank? The LPS said once a day and the bottle of Tetra food says 3 times a day, I'm Confused!
Thanks,
Candice
I do mine twice a day .. morning bigger helping than the evening.
This is how I feed ... http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?t=1381
Twice a day.
Skip one day a week.
Or skip morning feed on a Tuesday and Thursday.
The skipping helps clean out the fish's gut.
you need to judge this a bit for yourself. I feed my fish twice a day , a snack in the morning and main coarse in the evening.I also feed just bloodworm for 1 day a week and skip the morning feed on that day and thats all they get. the golden rule i live by is rather underfeed than overfeed . its not good to overfeed your fish.
"rather underfeed than overfeed"
+1
Thanks, that makes more sense to me than once a day :)
It all really depends on what fish you are keeping?
Like tetras and the like require much less often than the likes of Discus. Discus ideally should have around 6-8 small feeds throughout the day, whereas Bettas should have food around 3 times a week!
Cheers!

Sorry for the Hijack - Aqua, but we learn something everyday .. and it is still about feeding ;-)
@ Big G "Bettas should have food around 3 times a week" - really? Did not know that. Is this true even if I am trying to condition them for nest building? Trying to follow the advise that you do not feed the male & female while they are in the tank together and that you only feed the male once he has been removed and the fry are swimming. What would be better Prof's high in shrimp or high in algae flakes - or do I stick to my grinder mix?

Hey Ferdie.
Again it really depends on your Betta? Some Bettas cannot handle a lot of food, and get fat very quickly, whereas others will eat a bit more and not get so fat! Its all to do with metabolism!
The other issue is that Bettas will keep on eating even if they are not hungry, so overfeeding can be dangerous to them. Some people recommend feeding Bettas every other day, but any more than this and there is a danger of overfeeding.
As for conditioning I cannot say? I have never bred bettas. Dale (Solex69) would be the best to say?

if you'r a working person its most likely gonna be twice a day and it shouldnt be a problem,i dont know how many people have the luxury of nipping off home to do a midday feed in the week but i aint one of em.and while its most probably better to underfeed than overfeed the trick is to judge when u think they've had enough which in the case of some fish is never enough so now i just feed until i see the stomach is a bit extended.
3 times a day for me but I have a growing Oscar and he eats like a vacuum cleaner...
Give them some bloodworms every now and then. They will eat them.
Frozen blood worm are ravished by most fish, but should not be fed more than 3 or 4 times a week. Any more than this and you are not doing your fish any nutritional favours!
It is important to provide a 'balanced' diet, so the likes of brine shrimp (artemia) and white and black moquito larvae are good foods to combine! Spirulina can also be a good addition from time to time, if the fish will eat it!

G!
I don't only feed them bloodworms. I have flakes and brine shrimp.
