we had an old garmin quest years ago that broke. Recently my dad got a navig8 free with his phone. It has a touch screen which i generously shattered by dropping it about 1meter from the ground while unlocking the car.

I now need to replace the glass touch screen part, can anyone tell me where to buy a spare part or have it replaced (i can replace the part myself to save money, had i known where to buy)

beyond that, it was my dads. I use it more than he sees it.. As gn article clerk i do alot oe driving to places ive never been to and mostly wont go again so i wont get to memorize routes. So i need to buy myself one. Where does one buy gps devices, anyone know who sells them affordably?

Lastly, is there a specific make i should go for?

Thanks in advance for sharing

Ive got a 205 . Works fine. And I find that Macro is the cheapest when it comes to a GPS

Hi ferryman,

My i'll get you the details for garmin from my brother, they have a good tech support/ helpdesk, not sure if they'll sell you the parts but i reckon they'll gladly repair it for you.

I'd say stick to garmin, it is the best gps around. Although i haven't heard bad things about tom tom which is kinda new in SA. don't settle for a phone gps, their receivers are horrible, i generally reach my destination before it switches on and that includes the time during which i'm lost. haha. Maybe the new phones are better...

Good luck,
h

Whilst I agree with Aidan Eel, I also disagree to a point. THe older generation GPS phones were a bit cr@ppy, and often took a few minutes (up to 20mins) to establish contact with the satellites. However, the new generation phones seem to have remedied this problem, and are a LOT better. A lot of the Nokia's are coming out with free GPS for life on their phones, and cost roughly the same price as a Garmin.

That being said, I have a Garmin 205, which is absolutely perfect for navigation, and doesn't have all the "optional extras" that garmin put in to try and justify the higher prices. It's a simple NAVIGATION tool, and not a bluetooth headset for your phone, with a memory car for MP3 music, movies and games. Watch Makro for great specials on this Garmin, if they not running it on special, check out Hifi corruption, or Cape Union Mart, they often run specials when Massmart (Game, Dion, Makro) aren't.

You should pay about R1,600.00 for the Garmin 205.

Correcto mundo, from what i understand the reception is a lot better. But i won't use it as my primary gps device just yet. I use my phone when i cycle to keep track of the stats and what not and for that it works well when it starts working.

HTC with android have got some good gps capable phones and google maps should hope full come to SA soon then things will be even better.

my s7350 ultra slim has google maps, but it fails to find my location. . . I like the sound of a 205 that just has navigation. I just need gps, not games or mp3 or anything. Just fast, accurate maps..

New phones use AGPS. It uses the cell towers to close in to on your location then the GPS kicks in. I've got a sony erricson aino and it takes me 5-10 seconds to find a gps signal. The the directional software also uses google maps. works like a charm. the 1st month was free but i had to subscribe again for the rest.

I have to agree, the Navig8 from JNC is good enough for us. It's cheap, and does it's job perfectly.

On my honeymoon 18months back my wife and I used my Nokia's maps to get prom Hermanus to Mossil bay. If anyone knows what I am talking about, the FASTEST route would actually be to go "backwards" towards CT for about 70km to get back to the N2, and then carry on FOREWARDS to Mossel Bay. THe Nokia however decided to take the shortest route, which was through the farmlands. We drove for an 80km stretch on a corregated dirt road... not going faster than 40km/h. Was an experience we'll never forget. (Isn't that what Honeymoons are for?)
