When looking for tank mates, there are two rules:
1) Avoid keeping other exclusively surface-dwelling species, such as Hatchetfish. Butterflies don't like sharing with other species, and the other fish may end up dead and/or eaten. True story.
2) Avoid 'nippy' species (those that like to bite and chase). The long, trailing fins of butterflyfish prove too tempting for fish like tiger barbs, and others that like to harass other fish (eg: Rainbow sharks) greatly stress the butterfly and provoke the fish to jump, which may end up with the fish jumping out.
Two suitable fish are Peter's Elephantnose and the African Ropefish. These guys occupy the bottom levels and won't bother your butterfly. As a plus, anything the butterfly doesn't eat at the surface, these guys will happily gobble up.
thanks for the info
i'll leave them out because i am thinking of getting some hatchetfish along with some small tetras and some guppys
