MWEB aims to ‘free the web’ with the lowest prices ever on uncapped ADSL accounts
An online social media campaign called ‘Free The Web’ has over the past few days gained momentum, sparking speculation that one of the larger companies are planning something big.
A Facebook page was created with the message “We're frustrated by the limitations of the internet in SA. Let's celebrate the greatness of the web and call for a change! Join us and be the first to know when we succeed in our cause to Free The Web in SA!”
This Facebook page quickly grew in popularity through both word of mouth and an aggressive advertising campaign, and has to date attracted over 13,000 fans.
The company behind the initiative, which was until recently unknown, said that “Our grand plan is announced in just a few days time [today].”
MWEB unveils their plan

that all seems nice but lets not forget the rental that we have to pay for renting the telkom line which is roughly about R150, and also having to rent an ADSL line which is roughly another R150, so thats R300 + R219 = R519, ain't so cheap anymore...but i have heard that some companies don't charge for ADSL line rental, lets hope this is the case with MWEB....never the less, glad to see the price dropping...nice thread Toyerk...

Linxie

That all inclusive price, I wonder if that includes the adsl line rental, because if it does then that's R200 more than what we're currently paying for a 4mb 5gb package with telkom.

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 10:37
actually it is Uncapped All-inclusive 384kbps: R349 + Telkom Line rental of R150 = R499 for an uncapped service, I say it is worth it:blink1:

the all inclusive includes the ADSL line rental as far as I know

JesseG
18-03-2010, 10:38
i say we should wait a bit, wait till METRO CONNECT goes public, and then you will see a real drop in price...

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 10:39
I am not going for it yet as I work for the competitor and have an uncapped account :)

JesseG
18-03-2010, 10:40
@Linxie - you are saying that you have a 4mb line with all line rentals inclusive for R700?

Who's the competitor Toyerk?

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 10:42
Telkom, please don't diss me, I am merely an employee, need to feed my family :)

JesseG
18-03-2010, 10:44
I won't diss you, i've had so much of headaches with Telkom, man, they are a useless company...i do hope that they will pull their thumbs out of their ass and provide a decent customer service though...hey toyerk, speak to management bud...

well, i'm in kind of the same position as you Toyerk, as i work for the Government!!! I'm part of the "crew" so to speak...but i'm here undercover, lol

Linxie
18-03-2010, 10:46
That's correct JesseG
It changes by a few rand every month, but on average we pay R700.00 for the cap, adsl line rental, telephone line rental as well as that call option that you have to take which they don't tell you about.

Toyerk, Telkom employees are lucky! Geez man, you guys get the fastest line & its uncapped... you a manager there aswell?

Wimpie
18-03-2010, 10:49
JesseG my sister in law also works for Telkom, the company is in a real mess and she struggles to get a job elsewhere.

SA is still very expensive, Australians have uncapped 20mb lines for 50AUD (R337). Just shows how we are being ripped off once again.

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 10:49
nope not in management, I deal with escalations regarding internet problems and I have a 384 line at home, so not all Telkom employees are that lucky to have 8MBps at home

In India you can get uncapped 256k for R35

JesseG
18-03-2010, 10:50
Oh, but you only have 5gb at your disposal Linxie...thats not enough as i intend to download movies and alot of series as well as software...oh and lets not forget online gaming...but your connection must be super quick hey

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 10:52
yep it is hard finding a job elsewhere when working for Telkom, I live in Jhb and have to trek to Centurion everyday, looking for something closer to home though

JesseG
18-03-2010, 10:52
Geez louise, thats ridiculously low...Why can't we have those prices here in SA? its because the Government want's to financially rape us...its so depressing when i hear things like, makes me want to cry!!!

Linxie
18-03-2010, 10:53
Tell them they're ripping you off Toyerk :D you deserve atleast a 4mg line

JesseG you should see how much cap COD MW2 chows when hosting... most of the time we end up buying another 4gb just for online gaming.

Would actually like to go for the neotel uncapped package, but waiting for their speeds to increase first before we decide on that (then keep the 4mb just for gaming)

JesseG
18-03-2010, 10:54
what exactly do you do for a living Linxie?

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 10:54
its not what you deserve but what you can afford, have to pay for the line, it is not free, even though there is a discount or rebate as it is called

Linxie
18-03-2010, 11:04
Ohhhh I thought you guys got it for free *oopsie*
JesseG, I'm a secretary for a truck company ^^,

Wimpie
18-03-2010, 11:06
You guys spend alot of time online :) I'm a software engineer at Shoprite, spend most of my time searching for solutions and TASA!!

JesseG
18-03-2010, 11:07
By software engineer, you mean software developer?

Wimpie
18-03-2010, 11:07
Yip same thing

JesseG
18-03-2010, 11:11
dude, i'm a field service engineer, i don't create hardware, i just diagnose problems, you on the other hand create programs!!! it can't be the same thing...

anyways, back to the thread...the cost of the internet in SA is the only reason as to why i don't have an internet connection at home!

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 11:23
at least prices are coming down, that is good :)

Wimpie
18-03-2010, 11:28
Do proper research JesseG. Google "define:software engineer".

I cant ever use adsl, as soon as Telkom put new phone lines, they are stolen, seriously, like 2 days after replacement, I have neighbours paying for a sevice they cant use. What a joke!!!

Donny
18-03-2010, 12:19
Hopefully will move into a space of a complete wireless high speed internet connection which will also allow voice.

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 12:29
*cough* w-cdma :)

Donny
18-03-2010, 12:33
Whats that Toyerk ?

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 12:46
A wireless internet service with voice (Basically 3g) - speeds are currently up to 7.2Mbps

Donny
18-03-2010, 12:56
Then you will run into 2 things that you will hate about 3g, the bill and cell shrinkage. :) :)

Franna
18-03-2010, 13:12
we use a telkom 4gb line with 7gb int cap and 7gb local. Costs me about 700 maybe more im not sure. The mweb one sounds lekker. Im already caped. Excuse the cellphone typos

butcherman
18-03-2010, 14:42
is the Mweb uncapped product, shaped or unshaped?

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 14:44
shaped for normal consumer, unshaped for business, business prices cost a bit more though. I can do 30GB on my 384 shaped :) even more if I keep it on

butcherman
18-03-2010, 14:52
but surely its not uncapped? i mean if i download 1TB someone gonn complain, when sentech first cam out i use to DL about 18GB a month and a gentleman called me telling me it was uncapped with in reason and threatened to suspend the account if i carried on abbusing it.

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 14:56
according to posts Mweb will only take action if someone abuses the network in a way which affects the overall experience of their users, if there is no problems on the network you can download 1TB if you want as long as it does not affect other users experience, it is totally uncapped

Thinking Mweb should pay me for this

Wimpie
18-03-2010, 15:06
lol Okay so now we have affordable uncapped ADSL, but the speed is still SLOW!!! :(

Toyerk
18-03-2010, 15:13
When one is use to dial-up, 384k kicks a$$ :)

JesseG
18-03-2010, 15:42
its not that affordable, you are looking at R369 as an average with a slow connection, my personal opinion, i don't think its worth it...

Gareth
18-03-2010, 19:23
I personaly don't think this Offer is going to last long. why I say this is because if you think about it the only reason we want uncapped ADSL is so we can download a lot of stuff right, so if we all download 24/7 we are going to cause a problem for Mweb so I doubt this is even going to see the end of this year.
