View Full Version : A little advice please
Hi guys,
I just want to find out what the general advice would be. I will be getting my new tank in about a months time. 1500 (l) x 400 (h) x 340 (w).
What would be the best fish to keep in here? I was thinking of discus or oscars? But I'm not quite sure.
I've got one tank with two angel fish in and one tank with some guppies and another with 2 malawi cichlids in and another with 4 widows (I think they are called that not quite sure).
Any opinions?
Many thanks
Mel

The tank is to shallow to keep adult discus. you will have 20 to 25 cm high fish that will only have 30 to 35cm worth of water to swim in up or down.....
Yeah, I did some reading last night and it does not look like discus are an option. Any other ideas?

Why not go for something like a south east asian tank with some stunning pearl gouramis and some smaller peaceful barbs like cherry barbs, with some horse-face or khuli loaches at the bottom of the tank?
That sounds nice, will look into it. Thanks Henk

Oscars are my favorite freshwater fish, but I think tank height is also a problem for adult oscars. You could make an awesome Lake Tanganyikan setup maybe.

I'm based in Henley on Klip, Vaal Triangle in Gauteng.

Thanks Steve, I will look into that as well.

I've never been to their place but ja. my moms uncle stays there. sounds really cool.
What sort of pet shops do you have around?
It's not a bad place.
Not much in the pet shop line, we have one in Meyerton which is ok for tropical fish but there are no marine ones around here. The one in Meyerton also does not have very much of a selection at all but atleast you can see they do care and take care of the fish and other animals. It is very very small.
I've had no luck finding any real good LFS around here yet. They all seem to be in places like Pretoria, Benoni, Boksburg etc.

if you need to travel far with the fish take some cooler boxes with. They will keep the fish warm. Also phone a few of the LFS's and ask them who can pack with O2
I have a polistyrene (excuse spelling) box which I use when I have to travel far. The LFS I go to always uses O2 in the bags. I just wish I could find one closer to home that has a good selection!!
