View Full Version : First fry ever.
Was busy cleaning my tanks the other day and was at the last one and wanted to remove some grass that came loose and floating on top.
When I put my fingers in the tank I noticed some movement that was a bit odd since I cant remember putting in any misquito larwe.
Had a closer look and there was 2 small fry:bigsmile:
O ja by the way I have a single pair of endlers in here I got from Dolphin.
I know you need to be really useless not to get guppies to breed but still it is the first fry I ever had since starting the hobby a few months back.
Endlers are not suppose to eat there fry so could there have been only 2 to start with?
The female still looks pretty fat/pregnant.
Would take pics but have no idea how to go about taking pictures of something that small that never keep still.

If my memory serves me correctly, Endlers will eat fry when they are very small, but as they grow they leave them alone. And then when you have some medium fry, and you get more small fry, they will leave those alone too becasue there is mixed sizes so less interest to eat the small ones.

Ace, all 11 from a single hatch/delivery? Not sure what you call live breaders giving birth.:p
No I have 6 x pairs that I bought from him. Don't know who dropped fry. There is two of the females looking that if they are going to explode!! So I'm expecting more fry soon.
Might have to ask prof how many fry they have at a time.
They don't get very big so I would have to say max 20 fry??

Breeding
Very easy. Endler's will breed in the community tank and are incredibly prolific. To be honest breeding this species is more of a case of 'when' rather then 'how'. If you're not interested in breeding them, buy only male fish. Otherwise breeding is much the same as for many other livebearers. We recommend that several females should be kept to every male in order to dissipate vigorous harassment by males. Areas of dense planting will also help. Males constantly display to females, spreading their fins and quivering in front of them. They can produce new broods every 23-24 days. Brood size can be anything from 5-25 depending on the female's age and size. The adult fish will rarely eat their young but the best method of raising them is still to remove the gravid female to a separate tank and allow her to give birth there before returning her to the main aquarium. The use of breeding nets or traps is not recommended as their small size is not suitable for raising fry. The fry are quite large and will accept brine shrimp nauplii or powdered flake from birth. They grow very quickly if fed 2-3 times per day, with males exhibiting adult colouration in only 3-5 weeks and females being able to produce young at 2 months of age.

I think my female is still very young. The fry do seem a little to big for them to eat. Maybe that is why they don't.

about 2 years ago i got 2 fry in the packet with the fish i had bought and even tho i bought angels and no guppies they turned out to be guppies (how weird but awsome is that)

You must remember that you have bought hybrid Endlers, not pure Endlers. They have been crossed with normal guppies and they will therefore eat their young like normal guppies unless you give them some protection.
The Endlers that I have been supplying are pure wild type Endlers and even these will eat their young if they are not given some protection, although they are far less interested in eating their babies than normal guppies are.

Whats the Difference between normal guppies and Endler guppies? I bought 5 normal Guppies about 4 months ago and now im sitting with about 80. But my females arent really interested in eating their fry.

Hi Vis and Dolphin,
Could you please clarify which types of "Endler's" these are supposed to be? I am under the impression that these are the "Tiger Endlers", the "Red Endlers" and "Blue Endlers" that you offered a while back? Am I correct on this?

I saw some of the endlers that came from you and if you where to put
mine in the same tank I am pretty sure it would be extremely hard to pick
out which ones came from where.
Went away over the weekend to St Lucia and came back today to find 18 more fry in the tank! If I kept a marine tank - would go to Cape Vidal and catch my own fish. Not palnning to so don't go ranting on about permits.
Nice!! If they have nice hiding spots you'll get them big and they will start breeding and..........
