View Full Version : Snails
A few months ago I introduced 2 small snails to my fry tank. They have reproduced at quite a rate. There is no substrate in the tank so they are easy to catch. My YOYOs really enjoy them. I crush the shells before I put them in our other tanks.
Can any body ID these.
This is a young one. The adults are about 12mm

Shell of the other species. Adults about 5mm.

Snail eggs 21 x less than 1 mm in diam. (Makes them difficult to see on new plants)

illegal but still good unless you have sensitive plants..
Thanks for the info guys. It just puzzles me why they would be illegal ??? Bought them from a petshop in Boksburg
because they would easily survive in our natural water systems in SA, LFS stil keep them because the is not properly enforced

They might survive in durban but i very much doubt they would make it through a wp winter neverless joburg... But i guess thats besides the point, we can't pick and choose the laws to obey so untill someone with some semblance of intellagince comes along we stuck with it!
That being said apple snails really aren't that great they shred sensitive plants...

Apple snails lives VERY happily in ponds outside during our winter....
Had a very interresting experience last night. Two weeks ago I lost 9 Neons over a period of a week. No evedence were left, not a head, tail or anything. Went and bought 11 Neons again last Sunday. Sunday night lost 2. Monday night lost 2. Last night I caught one of the snails in the act of eating a Neon... The Neon was actually still wriggling under the snail when we spotted this happening. Within 30 seconds there was NOTHING left over of the Neon. Anybody else experienced something like this?

:amazed: I didn't know snails ate live 'animals'. I was under the, apparently false, impression that they would feed on dead/decaying fish and plants only. Geez, you live and learn!:wondering:
Sorry to hear about your losses Carping - so are you going to remove the snails?
Yep Veegal, also had the same impression as you. If it wasn't for the fact that I caught the bugger redhanded, I wouldn't have believed it. Just wish I could have seen him catch the Neon. Don't know what tactic he employed to be able to catch the Neon.
As to the question if I will be removing them from the tank, no, they are very interresting creatures to watch.... and they keep the tank clean LOL

Stick a webcam on the tank and watch how the sneaky thing does it!:bigsmile: It would make for some interesting viewing.

Anyone want to get rid of some apple snails? I will help you prevent them from getting into our watersystems, by putting them in my breeding tanks, to eat all the leftover food! I need about 20 - pm me please!
Gert.
Does anybody here have some experience and/or advise regarding breeding of apple snails? Mine layed a cluster of eggs on Friday night. The cluster is sitting about 10mm above the water line. My first question is, how long does it take for them to hatch?

yea i breed them allllll the time. all you need to do is make sure the cluster remains moist. not sure how long it takes from there... i never count :D
Here's a good article to read

Thanks Solex69. Very informative link.
Quick update on the snail saga... First batch is busy hatching. Exactly 2 weeks after they were laid. Quick head count (well, those that I could see LOL) is about 50. And there are 5 more batches sitting in the tank's hood. Seems like I am going to have a LOT of snails soon LOL
Hi all
can anyone tell me what snail this is, and any info on it.
Thanks
So which snails are the best for eating algae? And they must also be able to avoid becoming loach lunch...
Hi Laure
In my own thread on snails I asked pretty much the same thing, and here is an excpert from the reply Solex 69 gave me:
"Malaysian Trumpet Snails are awesome....good for any tank. They don't chomp plants, keep your substrate healthy and they are an excellent cleaning crew. Most of the times, you won't see them as they are buried under your substrate and you'll only have to remove some of the snails once in a while if you notice that there are seriously too many of them (ie, when they all come out to feed, they cover the substrate)
These snails are also survivors from loach attacks due to their burrowing abilities. So, go get some if you can"
Hope that helps
