Hey. My girlfriend got me 2 of these fish coz she liked them. They are 3 times the size of my other fish but seem to get along well with my tetras and mollies. what are they.

And what snail is this. Should I get rid of it. Its one of those that stowaway on plants when you buy them .

I would say that is a sailfin vellifera mollie. Definitly a male

Jip I agree with Ace007 it is defiantly a sail fin Mollie but as for the snail it might be some sort of pond snail

i think its the Yucatan Molly because its hard but i count more then 15 fin rays

The reason I said it to be a velifera is because you said they are 3x the size of your other fish

My other fish are tetras guppies and balloon mollies so its not very hard hehe. Ok so I take it its a sail-fin then. Thanks for the help. I'm making a file with all my fish and there info . so I want to get it right.

And the female looks pregnant so joy. But i have to get a new tank soon as my guppies and balloon mollies also gave birth .

It could be a Sailfin that has been raised in a tank. They don't grow the huge fin if raised in a tank, only when raised in large pools.

That snail is a pond snail. If you don't want billions of them, get rid of it.

not so certain that this is a sailfin as the dorsal fin does not look like a sail fin type from the pic...

I would say that its going to be completely impossible for anyone to categorically scientifically ID this fish to be a velifera or a yucatan or any other other with elaborate finnage and coloration thats resulted from years of cross breeding. Most if not all "sailfin" mollies available in the trade are highly hybridised velifera.

its top fin is actually big. he is just moving forward in the pic. The female has got almost no top fin. I will add pics of both and try to get him while still .

yep okay better pic and its 100% a sailfin molly... very nice gold "dusting" pattern!

Prepare yourself for some fry on that female. She looks big!! And can drop anything from 50+ fry. I had a big sword female that dropped 54 fry. And if I can judge from her size she'll give you more.

Im getting a new tank today. not very big but still. Should i maybe move her and him to that tank to keep the other fish from eating the fry?

She needs to be on her own in there and allot of grass in there. I have a thread of a V breeder trap that I made for live bearing fish. It works allot better than these traps what you buy in the pet shops.

You will need to look at her back side. The blacker the back the closer she is to dropping the fry. It is recommended to keep her with the other fish as long as possible. Then when it looks like she is about to explode move her to the new tank.

The tank does not need to be big. Just enough hiding space for the fry.

Move her to own tank and lots of grass and floating fern.
