Hi

After a number of posts regarding cheaper options I thought I would quickly list the possibilities. While it is true that specialist plant grow bulbs will more than likely yield better results, you can buy these and save some cash. They are available from any lighting retailer.

Philips aquarelle (only T8 imported to SA)
Osram fluora (only T8 imported to SA)
Sylvania 865 "daylight"
Sylvania growlux
Osram skywhite
General Electric 9325

Combinations are good. Try and combine a daylight tube with a pink plant tube such as the fluora or the growlux.

For those more technically minded, here are some links to some nice articles:

I have used the Skywhite T8 and when I upgraded to T5 I could not source the Skywhite. So I went with 6500K Sylvania tubes and I can't notice any difference in colour appearance and the plants seem quite fine too.

I am currently using Sylvania 865 (6500K) T5 54W bulbs and I am very happy with them. I have 6 of those on a 105 gallon tank and when I have some extra cash I will replace 3 with Sylvania Grow Lux bulbs.

I get my bulbs from Electro Quip in Newton Park for the PE folk who my be interested. R50 each. Techtronic dual 54W ballasts for R180 or Osram dual 54W ballasts for R250.
