My next project is building my own tank. I have never built a tank before but have done the odd repair. Its going to be 60l * 60b * 50h. I want to build 3 of these tanks and put them into a single stand one on top of the other. Not 100% sure on the hight of the tanks yet, as I want space to do cleaning and setups in the tanks. Its not for display purposes but rather breeding or growout setups. After I'm happy with the fact that I can actually build the first tank then only will I get the stand made. Will need someone who can weld. First thing call builders and find out if they got stock of 6mm glass.

not sure how the pros do it ,but ive found old enclopedia britanicas are brialiant at keeping the glass square and straight up while silicone dries other than that its a lot easier than you think i just still need silicone lessons .please take pics when you do it i always seem to get silicone all over camera or phone and then curse and dont take any pics

I had a leak in my 910mm tank about 2 weeks ago. Luckily saw it in time not to loose anything.

Stripped the whole tank with a stanley blade and did all the silicone over.

It's really not that hard to do but you'll need the extra hand to start the whole process.

Another thing is to put some tape where you want your silicone to stop. Makes cleaning the lines allot easier.

We also used tape to keep the glass in place after the silicone and left it like that overnight.

I found that a bit of sunlight dish washing liquid in a teacup of water does the trick. When you make the mixture make sure you put enough sunlight that the water is almost green and well mixed, dip one of your fingers in the water and rub it with another one and it should feel like you have oil between them. Once you have layed your beed of silicon dip your finger into the sunlight mixture and run your finger along the silicon it shoulld come out smooth and make sure you dont touch the rest of the glass with that finger, and it washes off your finger a whole lot easier. Did get hold of builders today and they do have 6mm glass in stock. Yipee.
So saturday I'm buying the glass for the first tank.

From what I have seen builder 6mm if very green glass. Also get the guys to sand the edges. I've had some glass cut at builders and they do work with window like tolerances - meaning a straight edge might not be that straight and corners are seldom 90degrees all around.

All this high electricity cost is making me think twice about this project. So I'm now gonna set up my 6ft for my silver dollars.

Eish! Not cool, Damn eksdom stuffs up everything. If you were going to breed, were you planning on breeding to sell? Would that not subsidize some of the electricity costs?

You know one can not really make money with selling fish. Everyone wants stuff cheap or free, can we blame them.

you can't really make money from fish because the only way is to become a supplier to a LFS or something and if you want to get that right you are going to have to supply when ever they need miss once and you are off the supplier list.
and to sell to a fellow hobbyist at a high price is just wrong in my opinion...

The breeders don't make much money it's the LFS that make all the money.

But with us hobbyist we do it for the love of it and if we can reep a reward all the better.
So I would say if you can make a few rand to assist with fish food and general maintainence will be nice.
