It is commonly stated that the best way to get a pair of angels is to raise 5 or 6 young ones and let then pair of as adults. OK done that, but now that I know which is male and female I would like to change the pairs, to create a pair that will produce the colour I am looking for. My first pair laid eggs a week ago and lost the eggs to the catfish, now I want to breed that male(gold, pearl-scale, vailtail) with a spare female(zebra) in order to get babies of the colour I am looking for(zebra or natural colour with extra long fins).

So do I just put the male and female I want to breed in their own tank, will the male take the new female or am I wasting my time?

Does anybody have any experience in this regard

Ask Veegal. She knows a lot about angels.

Rogerrabbit I have found that sometimes when you force a pair you experience a lot more agression between them during spawning and post spawning time. HOWEVER, you can force pair as you described by moving the male and female into a separate tank and they will usually spawn, not always peacefully though so make sure that you keep your eye on them to intervene should things get too ugly.

Seems like nature is taking care of my problem as I am contemplating a solution. I recently got a very big, very old half black angel from a friend, that I have been keeping under quarantine in a 3' on his own. Last night I placed my other three angels( pair plus odd zebra female) in the tank with the monster, obviously he chased them and kept all three huddled in a corner the whole evening and today till I got home. I just checked on them now and Mr Big has taken a fancy in my paired up female, she is at one side of the tank, he is showing off all around her and my original male and zebra female are huddled in a corner at the far end. Just need to set up another tank and move the new lovers and leave the two that I want to pair on their own, sure the male will feel he has lost a female to a stronger male as in nature and I had very little to do with it.
Hope it works.
