Yup - thos egranules contain a lot of astaxanthin(I think - head bit muddy with start of a cold) - the red coloration have found that it stains the water yellowish...pop in a bag of Seachem Purigen...problem solved.

Seachem Purigen in your filter - it takes out any colourants.

No offence to the pet shops in boksburg but pet masters and 1 or two others but they are sick with there prices! I really dont feel like paying R24 for one plant! I do buy certain things from them but not plants or live stock! Baught fish from pet masters and lost quiet a few fish! Not trying to run any one down and i understand that i was probably jus unlucky but dont want to take that chance again! Just looking for a really nice pet shop that specialise in fish more than anything else?

Unfortunatly there isnt one shop in the whole of Gauteng where you can walk in and expect to find all the cool plants that you would like... Some are better than others, but it is very much a "get it while it's there" scenario...

Bying fish from any LFS can bring in disease...so allways quarantine your new purchases...

As for a shop that has all the cool, weirder stuff you might want? Take a trip up North and visit Pet Stop some time...

Morning.

I had a similar situation with my tank, the reason for the yellow colouration is the food granules and 80% of the time it is due to overfeeding. I cant help but feed my fish a little extra they seem sooooo hungry. Anyway I have a trickle filter, what I did is I put in trays Fluval zero-carbon media which has helped tremendously for the discolouration and also assists if there are any smells coming fro your tank. I have really seen substantial improvement in the clarity of my water and would strongly suggest the same. Over and above that media, enough filter wool or batting also contributes to the clarity, if we dont have enough of the stuff the filters dont work at its best cause it does not have the ability to collect the impurities that the filter pump is drawing through the filter.

I hope this helps it has helped me

Cheers

Thats the thing all the food gets eaten up so i dont think im over feeding! I have alot of bottom feeders so everything gets cleared up i have 2 spotted talking catfish 3 corydoras(more to come as soon as my lfs gets some) 4 khuli loaches, want to end up at like 6 corydoras and 6 khuli loaches!

As for in my filter its a 300l/h i have this green thick rough spong stuff(like a brilo pad typ stuff) ceramic rings charcoal bag and some bigger pours black sponge! I find that the white cotton stuff gets blocked way to fast!

getting blocked could mean that it is catching the dirt from the tank

I did not read the whole thread but the last part of your post lead me to the following

A filter that is getting blocked to fast tend to be to small for the bio-load it must carry :)
Invest in an additional filter that can use activated carbon, helping with the yellow water and help to catch the debris and deal with your bio-wast. An extra filter can not do your system harm and then you have a backup as well!

How big is the tank in question ?
And how is the stocking in this tank?
Canisters get pricey but you could DIY one...

I built one of these once for a friends pond and it worked pretty well. Made it a lot bigger and added some stuff but still the same idea.
And those really fancy little separators he made are not an issue you can just stack your media ontop of each other in Veggie bags or what ever works.

Standard 3ft is what about 150L ?
This is a bit of a grey area apparently but try to get 5 to 10 times tank volume per hour. Here is a Thread (http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?6105-Filtration-rates-flow-and-other-questions) with a bit more info on this for you, Good luck it's a lot of reading.
I'd say go for 900L/h to 1200L/h canister And my 1200L/h canister is aprox R 1,500 to R 2,000 new, so a DIY could cost you half of that if you buy stuff from the right place. The one I did for my friends pond was about R 600 excluding the pump coz he had one already.

O also if you buy a canister make sure you can get spares in RSA for it. I have to buy new pipes and seals for mine and it's gonna cost me another 1k to ship the stuff in from the UK. And the stuff is really not worth that much.
