Hello Everybody
I need some help. I want to make a Java Moss Backdrop for my 100lt community tank. I know how to do it, but want to know if the attached mesh will work. I found it at a hardware store. It is a mesh ( rubbery feel to it) with holes 5mm x 5mm. I don't want to put something poisonous into my tanks though. This seem to be made out of nylon with a coating?
If this will not work, what can you suggest?
Please help
yes it will work. just be careful how you place it into your tank. some cases , fish get trapped behind the moss wall. so the idea is to get it as close to the glass as possible
Java moss walls do not work that great. Rather use christmas or Taiwan moss.
In regards to the netting it should be fine. When you mount it put the bottom into the substrate and the top above water level. Make sure there is no gaps on the side or the fish will get in.
Also make sure you have enough moss so there is little to no gaps when you put the moss between the mesh.

Or try get hold of some weeping moss (Vesicularia ferriei) and if you do tell me where you found it please :)

Vis,
What about Spiky or Flame moss ?
Would they work for a moss wall ?
Spiky moss will be great. Flame not so much.
Another thing to remember is that a moss wall has a certain lifetime.
You would want the moss to grow very dense out of the mesh. This will however let the moss between the mess die away slowly until it all falls apart.

Thanks for all the input guys. How else can I plant moss to create a nice hiding place for fry, and that can be beautiful at the same time....... I would like spiky and christmas moss as well...... So everybody are welcome to donate LOL
Get some driftwood and tie moss to it the correct way. Keep it short and clean.
If you are able to remove the driftwood to trim the moss you will save yourself loads of trouble and headache.
Ask Barry M he has some wicked skills

RFSwanepoel , seem to me we all struggle to get moss. I am looking for this as well, and for spiky moss, or any moss for that matter. Will let you know if I find any

Seems to be a good market to start importing and growing for resale.
I know some of them are blacklisted.

I have send bags full different mosses all over the country at no charge only asking that they share again.
I wondered what happened to all those people.
Vis,
Thanks once again!
I have been doing the same on this side of the country with the spiky + flame and can also ask the same question.

That is also a pretty cool moss...
Does it grow up down or in all directions and does it bush out well?
Only keeping Fontanus at the moment.
gdt78 and Vis (indirectly!) I am in posession of Spikey, thanks to you guys. It's growing beautifully... I haven't enough to share yet, sorry, guys, but once I have I def. will.
I'm equally puzzled at the continued shortage of plain ol' Java - I received some, and have sent bagsfull all over SA since. And yet, everyone is still begging for it? WEIRD! You have to wonder where it goes to... :hmmmm:
Fissidens is a small moss that usualy spread sideways.
Go look for some of my tanks I think it is "Past the old tree" and my Comp tank that has some fissidens in it.
Lizid I only have fissidens left after my move. Lost almost everything exept a very small amount of fissdens.
Ah so you in the same boat as me then EXcept my Fissidens did not make it lol...Bladdy Claddo...
Ok in that case I might be able to help you with christmas, Singapore and Java in a couple months time..

This is incredibly beautiful! How long does it take moss to grow like this?
That is only the flame moss.
Later on I added fissidens to the front of the path and on the piece of would in the middle.
I wondered what happened to all those people.
I got a small amount of Java from you, but it is growing so sloow! Now about the size of tennis ball. But, all my plants took a hell of a nock with this BBA ...

LOL! Must be Gautengers!
Well- I love this, I am learning a lot here :)
I decided against the backdrop- But I have a problem. The only driftwood in Bloem is mopani wood, and I don't want water that look like tea for years on end!

I did try to find it online, but no luck. LOL ( Perhaps I am just technologically challenged)
The mopani I bought 8 months ago is still colouring my water , and I did leave it in water with water changes for 4 months. Apparently charcoal will restore the water clarity, according to our local fish world

Try some Seachem Matrix in your filters for a while that might also work.

Nope, Matrix is bio only. Maybe you are thinking Purigen?

Maybe he should try both :)
Can't make it worse to use both and both are awesome products.
